Clarinet and Piano-Following the Henle edition of the Grand Concerto In F Minor Op. 5 (HN 1209) the series of Crusell’s Clarinet concertos has been expanded to include the one in B flat major op. 11. The Swedish composer washimself a prominent Clarinet virtuoso and the concertos were tailor-made for himself so to speak. Despite being technically very demanding the Concerto In B Flat Major avoids being overly virtuosic and wins usover with its melodic ingenuity. It is a very welcome addition to the early Romantic repertoire for the Clarinet. The clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer edited the edition in an exemplary manner consulting the solesurviving source the first edition of 1829. Johannes Umbreit was responsible for the study score which wonderfully fits the hands.

Animaux minute, ce sont 60 pièces très courtes (1 à 2 minutes) pour clarinette seule, prévues pour accompagner un élève dès le début de son apprentissage, et tout au long de sa progression jusqu'aux niveaux les plus avancés. Ce n'est pas une méthode d'apprentissage, mais une série de 'vignettes', dans lesquelles on pourra choisir un morceau pour une audition, un examen... ou juste pour le plaisir. Au fil des morceaux apparaissent çà et là des éléments particuliers du langage musical, certains communs à nombre d?instruments, d?autres plus spécifiques à la clarinette. Par exemple, et dès la première page, on trouvera des appoggiatures brèves, et aussi une portée sans indication de mesure... Plus loin une note piquée, une syncope, puis deux... Tiens, un quintolet, tiens, un doigté spécial, Ici un '3 pour 2', un trille... Là, une douzième, une cadence, un do bémol... donc ça existe ? Il faut croire ! Et plus loin, un Flatter... quoi ? Ah ? Sonatas op.120 for Clarinet and Piano-In 1894 Johannes Brahms asked the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld to visit him during his beloved summer sojourn in Ischl adding “It would be really wonderful if you brought your B flat Clarinet with you andif you were in no great hurry” – for the two Sonatas Op. 120 were waiting to be rehearsed. The first performances were given privately directly afterwards and the press enthusiastically reported: “Thesonatas [...] are wonderful and will cause a great sensation”. These were the last chamber pieces Brahms wrote before his death and are considered two of the great masterpieces in the Clarinet repertoire.
