In this ballad, Reise ponders the Red Sea Swallow, of which only one was ever found (and dead, at that). The Flight of the Red Sea Swallow imagines the final flight of what may have been the last of its kind. Originally written for violin and piano, and premiered by Maria Bachmann, Flight has also been transcribed for flute and piano. For advanced performers. Duration: 17'.

The technically challenging concertante element that generally predominates in Rolla’s chamber music is by no means absent from these works. Its presence is limited to the outer movements of both quartets, and it is the violin and viola that receive almost all of the solo episodes.

Images for Solo Flute, Op. 38 by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is one of Bozza's most famous pieces. Technically challenging, it includes flutter tonguing, extreme range, and multi-phonics. Really enjoyable and often played in contests and representations, Images for Solo Flute, Op. 38 would fit advanced level players. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas, chamber works and ballets among others.

Johann Christian Bach was - as his father before him - only very seldom satisfied with the compositions that he put down on paper. Thus did this concerto too undergo many corrections/revisions by the composer and today consists of three movements of similar length. Although they were initially handed down separately at different locations, the motivic relationship as well as the melodic and figurative references among themselves clearly reveals the common identity of the three movements. Not only the final rondo is characterized by highly virtuoso passages, but both the slow, second movement as well as the introductory movement testify to youngest Bach son's compositional greatness, whose works later generations unjustly let almost fall into desuetude. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3840400.

Extraordinary violinist, performance artist, and composer Igudesman has written eleven solo viola works for viola-playing friends. Each individualized piece reflects the dedicatee to an extent, but Igudesman's humor and virtuosity find their way through. These are demanding works, but are excellent program pieces and encore flourishes. Several of the pieces can be heard on YouTube, as performed by the artists for whom they were written. Finally, the viola is getting some respect!
