Fanfare Prelude: O God, Our Help in Ages Past is based on the hymn tune St. Anne, which was used by Handel in the Chandos anthem O Praise the Lord and by J.S. Bach in his triple fugue in E-flat, The St. Anne Fugue. The arrangement presented here captures the thoughts of this magnificent hymn, which speaks of an unwavering reliance upon God.

Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674-1707) belongs to the generation of English composers following that of Henry Purcell. Not much is known about his early life, but by 1685 he was a chorister of the Chapel Royal, a group of liturgical musicians attached to the court. He held the post of organist at Winchester College from 1692 but later returned to London as Master of the Choristers at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Denmark’s March is perhaps his best-known work and was originally written for harpsichord, although Clarke later included it in a collection of pieces for wind instruments.

Adventure Land was commissioned by Clermont Communauté and the CREA (the directors of the local music schools and conservatories) in France. This work was the opening piece of a show combining orchestra, choir and actors. The story takes place in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, which an explorer discovers through a series of riddles and adventures. Adventure Land is written in the form of a symphonic march which features a slow and pleasant passage in the middle of the work. The result is a dynamic and playful piece, similar to the style that one might find in cartoons or in animated films. A few flavoursome introductory bars carry the listener off to a temple garden in Manchuria in North-eastern China. Mysterious incantations of the priests in the temple and the scent of incense set the scene, while the melody tells of two lovers. A Manchurian wedding procession passes by outside. In the street the coolies are becoming restless. Within the temple, all is calm. Again we hear the incantations of the priest before the lovers’ theme is heard in birdsong, with short quotes from the temple theme and coolie theme to end the piece. All’esterno sfila un corteo nuziale. Vocal score available separately: 1883-12-050 MS.
