French composer Alfred Désenclos (1912-1971) described his music as romantic. His music is expressive and atmospheric as heard in his Plain-Chant Et Allegretto for Trombone and Piano. Désenclos studied at the Roubaix Conservatory and he won the 1942 Prix de Rome. His Plain-Chant Et Allegretto was published in 1965 towards the end of the composer's life. A typical performance lasts around eight minutes in which the Trombone solo line is enhanced by rhythm and technique. As expected the two movements are contrasting suitable for the advanced trombonist. For all Tromboneplayers seeking alternative and challenging repertoire Désenclos' Plain-Chant Et Allegretto makes for a riveting performance.

Les bonnes raisons ne manquaient pas pour m'encourager à composer un concerto pour trombone basse et Orchestre d'Harmonie. Cette composition concrétise, en premier lieu, l'amitié fraternelle qui me lie au tromboniste basse Ben van Dijk depuis trente-cinq ans, et coïncide avec mes trente ans de carrière de musicien professionnel (1er mai 2007). D'autre part, j'ai souhaité apporter ma contribution au répertoire solo pour trombone basse, bien pauvre en oeuvres lyriques qui exploitent pleinement les capacités mélodiques et musicales de l'instrument. Enfin, ce concerto est un hommage à Piet van Dijk (1920-2003), le père de Ben, qui fut un musicien dans l'âme et un être extraordinaire. En tant que professeur de trombone et d'euphonium, il a joué un rôle essentiel dans ma carrière future de musicien et je lui en serai toujours reconnaissant. Un festival ambitieux autour du trombone offrait le cadre idéal pour la création de mon oeuvre : le festival Slide Factory 2007 organisé à Rotterdam par les membres du New Trombone Collective, ambassadeurs idéaux pour la littérature contemporaine pour le trombone. La création de Canticles (Cantiques) fut une expérience enthousiasmante, enrichie par l'étroite collaboration avec Ben van Dijk. D'ailleurs, je tiens à le remercier chaleureusement pour ses excellentes suggestions, son savoir-faire et sa passion. Je suis convaincu que cette pièce trouvera sa place dans les salles de concert ! The Romance for Trombone and Piano was given its premiere at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen in 1916 in an Orchestral version and with Axel Jørgensen's friend Anton Hansen as soloist. This fully tonal Scandinavian work of charm intelligence and lyricism was well received though the Orchestral parts were destroyed in the bombings of the Second World War. Jørgensen produced this Trombone and Piano version a few years after the premiere and it continues to enjoy performances and recordings today.

Kenneth Fuch's Bass Trombone Concerto places the soloist in the role of a musical protagonist, leading the players of the ensemble in a vibrant affirmation of lyrical melody, instrumental color, and orchestral texture. The workemerges from a serene atmosphere with the bass trombonist weaving fragments of melody from which the entire concerto evolves. The work takes the form of a through-composed extended single movement in four sections (Adagietto -Allegro - Allegro poco agitato - Allegro con brio) based upon the simple triadic intervals of the opening melodic fragments. Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise therefore that his compositions for wind instruments are at the forefront of the repertoire  Morceau Symphonique for Tenor Trombone being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra Gaubert was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed including his Morceau Symphonique for Tenor Trombone and Piano. Addressing many technicalfeatures including flourishing semiquaver passages a wide range lyrical melodies unusual intervals chromaticism and complex rhythms  Morceau Symphonique is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring advanced Tenor Trombone players.

This piece was originally written for the trombonist Michael Skitt as the final 'prank' movement of a concerto for trombone and orchestra. By popular request the piece has been given a separate piano part and has since been proved equally entertaining for trombone bassoon or cello! Within a month of its publication Buffoonery was set for trombone grade VIII on the Oxfordshire Instrumental Examinations Syllabus. Duration: 4- 5 minutes.Grade: 8

French composer Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer conductor teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional Cantabile Et Scherzando for Trombone and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Cantabile Et Scherzando  Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated yet true to the 19th century French tradition. Elements of the Cantabile include include legato phrasing dotted rhythms and triplets superbly contrasted in the Scherzando by staccato rhythms a quick tempo and scalic passages. For all advanced Trombone players Büsser's Cantabile Et Scherzando is essential to a varied repertoire.

French composer and music teacher Bernard Crocé-Spinelli (1871-1932) entered the Paris Conservatoire at thirteen years old. He won many prizes at the institution with his first published and successful composition coming when he was just 21 years old.Solo De Concours for Trombone and Piano has also remained a popular piece in the repertoire. Crocé-Spinelli led a successful career as a composer and music teacher. His positions saw him compose many solos for competition and auditions including Solo De Concours for Trombone and Piano. Included in the syllabus at the ParisConservatoire this work addresses advanced features including complex rhythms semiquaver flourishes and chromaticims among other features. For all advanced aspiring trombonists Crocé-Spinelli's Solo De Concours is an excellent addition to the repertoire.

 Here are a few pieces for trombone and piano. I wrote them following the progression of my son Valentin (to whom I dedicate them) who started the trombone in September 2011. Composed in 1956 by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) French composer conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927 this Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra has a strong French signature and lasts 16 minutes. The first movement starts with the Trombone and ends with a waltz theme the second movement is built on an ostinato that makes the Trombone sound more lyrical. The third movement is based on the two first ones with South American rhythms and ends with a virtuosic part played by the Trombone.
