Lute-Book Lullaby was written in 2012 for the Oxford-based choir Commotio and their director Matthew Berry ‘in admiration and gratitude’ for their work performing and recording many of the composer’s works in previous years. This short carol setting text from the William Ballet’s Lute Book (early 17 th cent.) is also included in the Christmas choral collection Noël! 3 (NOV310838)

This is the 'a capella' version of Alexander L’Estrange’s beautiful mixed voice composition Lute-book Lullaby and is the latest addition to the highly acclaimed Faber New Choral Works series.First performed by the choir Tenebrae directed by Nigel Short who also commissioned the work it was first performed on 12th September 2002 at St Luke's Chelsea London at a concert in support of Downs Syndrome.The piece can be found on the Signum Records CD Mother and Child (SIGCD501) performed by Tenebrae and Nigel Short.

Orpheus With His Lute is a work by Thomas Hyde for Unaccompanied SATB Choir. Dedicated to the memory of the late John McCabe this work is a setting of lines from Shakespeare's Henry VIII. A full performance lasts around 2 minutes. A review in the July/August issue of Choir and Organ magazine stated 'Hyde prioritises communication of the text in a direct manner and the work is only two minutes long but here the style is a perfect recreation of the mid/late 20th-century English partsong.

The Elizabethan and Jacobean lutesongs were often written with alternative versions for voices and lute. This volume is an introductory selection of these ‘airs’ with accompaniment which may be played on guitar or keyboard as well as lute.
