Jazz Triptych takes its lyricism, harmonies, rhythm and intrumentation from an eclectic range of traditional forms and models. As such, one can recognize traits of Waller and Kern in The Things My Baby Does to Me, Gershwin and the Barber Shop in Under the Mood (sprinkled with just a touch of Borodin!) and the Big Band sounds of Miller, Goodman and Ellington in the final movement Couldn't Be Happier..

The Fugitive is a three-part jazz fugue in bebop style on a walking bass. The renowned Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet performed the world premiere of the work, created in 2002 by the Dutch recorder player and composer Karel van Steenhoven, founder member of the ensemble. The title is a play on the word 'fugue' and its old meaning of flight or chase. The parts chase after each other with fast solos and licks, flee from each other, until they reach a chaotic climax - after a short quote from the James Bond theme. A striking title by the recorder expert who brilliantly mixes traditional and modern forms, styles and stylistic techniques.
