The cantata Sie werden euch in den Bann tun, part of Bach's first Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas and the earlier of two compositions of the same name, was probably first performed on the last Sunday after Ascension in May 1724. The text is concerned with suffering and the Antichrist, both of which are overcome by Christian faith. By employing all four ranges in solo capacities Bach creates the greatest possible variety. Bach's Reformation cantata, based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn, evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716, now missing, which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730, Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on, in the 1730s or 1740s, Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with a chorale setting which was unique, spacious and motet-like in its style; this - uniquely in this respect - incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas, one of the greatest works in the history of music. Bach created the cantata Erhohtes Fleisch und Blut by setting the sacred words to what had originally been the music of a secular cantata, presumably for the festival of Pentecost in 1727. Bach made few alterations to the musical structure, but he enlarged the original solo scoring for soprano and bass to a four-voice ensemble. Particularly notable among the solo movements is the extensive duet for soprano and bass in the form of a minuet, which in its musical language is certainly unique in Bach's cantatas. Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.. The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. For the magnificent opening of the oratorio season at the beginning of 1736 Handel presented a composition which, like hardly any of his other oratorios, gave him the opportunity to display his musical artistry: John Dryden's ode Alexander's Feast or the Power of Music, published in 1696, demonstrates the power of music by the example of the ancient hero, Alexander the Great. From the impressive lament on the death of Darius, the King of Persia, to the boisterous Praise of Bacchus Handel avails himself of the entire breadth of the musical representation of the emotions and the possibilities for expression. In the text by Newburg Hamilton added at the end of work St. Cecilia elevates the events of the ancient heathen story, which Handel expressed in plastic, skillful polyphony. Later, this homage to the patron saint of church music, Handel also present the opportunity to perform the work on St. Cecilia's Day (22 November). For the first time the present new edition is based consistently on Handel's conducting score, which he used for his own performances of the oratorio, thus not only eliminating timeworn errors, but also offering clarity concerning the choruses, the arias and recitatives, actually performed in Handel's concerts, as well as their sequence of performance. The new Carus edition offers two performance versions: the version of the premiere in 1736, as well as a revised version from 1751. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Concerto for Harp HWV 294 (CV 55.294) is also possible; Handel composed this work especially for Alexander's Feast (as an illustration of Timotheus, the ancient poet who played the lyre). Johann Georg Zechner is considered to be one of the most prolific Austrian composers of church music during the time of Maria Theresa. His ca. 250 surviving compositions, including works in practically all genre of church music, found a wide reception in many Austrian, Bohemian and Moravian monasteries and in pilgrimage churches. His Grosse Orgelsolomesse was probably composed in 1761 for the dedication of the organ in the monastery at Gottweig. As in other of his late works, the strict royal style, which essentially characterizes Zechner's compositions, is tempered through the use of elements of the galant style of composition. The second movement of the cantata Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille BWV 120 became particularly well-known through its re-use in the Credo of the Mass in B minor. The cantata is one of six surviving cantatas for inaugurations of the Leipzig Town Council from the pen of Johann Sebastian Bach. Although the autograph manuscript score can be dated to around 1742, it is not known precisely which town council inauguration the work was performed at.
