'The genesis of Aubade is a piece for Piano which I wrote in the spring of 2015 and which I afterwards thought might go rather well on the Oboe. As I warmed to this idea and a piece for Oboe began to develop Irealised that I was constantly thinking about Oboist friends with whom I had had such pleasure when playing in various wind ensembles. Aubade is therefore in a way a celebration of those friends. There is nospecial significance in the title but it seems to me to be appropriate.' - Michael Walshe

Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin in 1923, but was forced to emigrate via Ecuador to New York in 1939 because of her Jewish descent. In 2006 she returned to the city where she was born.In about three minutes, the small and charming two-part piece Kontraste [Contrasts] for oboe and harp captivates with clarity and limitation to the essentials. The name says it all: A lively humoresque is followed by a rather delicate, even almost melancholy second movement which is headed 'largo e mesto'. The composition was written in 2009/10 as a birthday present for the Swiss oboist - and this work's dedicatee - Heinz Holliger (and his wife, the harpist Ursula Holliger). / Hautbois Et Piano

Shadow of Paradise was written specially for Melinda Maxwell. The work was completed in 2005 the same year that she recorded the work together with Richard Benjafield (percussion) for the Dutton label.'The work is based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Kubla Khan and I have attempted to capture some of the spirit of his highly evocative text in my music.It is structured in three main sections: the opening section (And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard from far Ancestral voices prophesying war) is dramatic in nature with the oboe announcing two ideas - the first a high repeated note rhythmic pattern (later with multiphonics) answered by six differentlypitched drums and temple blocks and the second a short lyrical phrase mainly built on thirds.In the second section (A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw…Could I revive within me Her symphony and song) the solo oboe transforms the repeated notes and thirds of the first section into a love song underpinned by the percussionist’s vibraphone and crotales.A short reprise of the very opening leads into the final section (Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice…) which mirrors the text with three short dances in chain form folk-like in character and increasingly climactic. Oboe and Piano-'The Sapphire' is dedicated to Heath's daughter Naima Sapphire. On the day she was born in 2000 Heath was walking over the meadows in Edinburgh to see her and could hear bagpipes playing in the distance. That inspired him to write this piece.The melody and over-all style are influenced by Scottish traditional music however the harmonies come from modern jazz.

This is the Oboe Part for Witold Lutoslawski's Double Concerto arranged for Oboe Harp and Chamber Orchestra. Originally commissioned by Paul Sacher the work wasfinished in 1980.

Cantilena was commissioned by the London Chamber Music Society to celebrate their move to King's Place in October 2008. First performed by Nicholas Daniel and members of the Chilingirian Quartet at King’s Place London on 5th October 2008. The work is a short lyrical piece where an outsider [the oboe] joins the group [a string trio] and adds to their dialogue. At first the newcomer is treated with a mixture of suspicion and agitation but eventually is made welcome. The oboe is invited to share the musical theme that has been established which he then proceeds to embellish and adorn. He leads the harmonic changes that result in the theme being heard in manydifferent keys. He then introduces a new theme. The excitement grows and leads to a climax. A peaceful coda re-establishes the original theme and all ends harmoniously among the integrated quartet.

Concerto In C Minor for Oboe Strings and Basso Continuo composed by Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick [or Georg Friedrich Händel or Johann David Heinichen]. Piano reduction. There are three versions of this concerto with different assignments: Source A: In the library Schwerin [D-SWl] as „de Sing. Stulick' [Mus.5337]. Source B: In the collection Rheda [D-RH] as „Del Sing. Heinichen' [Ms 389]. Source C: In the univesity library Upsala [S-Uu]als „Dell Sing. Hendell' [i hs. 19:28]. The distribution of a baroque composition under various composers names was not uncommon and usually meant that it was aworthy work of high compositional quality. This Concerto for Oboe Strings and Basso continuo can serve in any case as evidence for this thesis. The question which of the three composers mentioned was the creator of the concert can not be answered conclusively. Two arguments suggest however that Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick (c.1700-1732) is the most likely of the three candidates: - The Schwerin manuscript [Source A] that names Stulick as the composer is the best by far; it contains far fewer errors and inconsistencies than the other two. - The designation of a work by a foreign composer name makes only sense if an unknown composer publishes under a name of a much more prominent composer not vice versa. Why should a work of Handel or at his time well-known Heinichen be played under the name of someone less known? We do not know much about the life of Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick. He was born around 1700 in Bohemia and worked in the 1730s as concertmaster at the court in Mainz where he died in 1732. Besides two Oboe concertos he composed a concerti à 4 for three wind instruments and BC.
