French pianist conductor and composer Jean-Michel Damase (1928-2013) was composing by the age of nine. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under many significant professors and won the 1947 Prix de Rome. 17 Variations for Wind Quintet is no exception to the composer's success. Damase is remembered for tackling every genre of music in order to bring further elegance to the tradition of French music. Frequently played in concerts 17 Variations for Wind Quintet is a charming work for an advanced quintet containing a Flute Clarinet Oboe Bassoon and French Horn. For all aspiring advanced Wind Quintets Damase's 17 Variations is an exciting addition to the ensemble's repertoire.

The play-along book ?Playing with the Orchestra VOL. I? has been designed for flute, Bb clarinet, oboe, Bb trumpet, F horn, violin and cello. The original symphony orchestra part for each instrument is printed in its own edition. The orchestral recordings were performed by an 80-strong professional orchestra, the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Hernando Rico. An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of HungarianSketches. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer’s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications and publishing some further new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

This piece provides a compositional challenge to find a balance between 2 wind instruments and piano the general structure of the piece is evolved so that different balances between the 3 instruments can be explored. The mainsection of this composition demonstrates evenly matched instruments whilst there are 3 episodes interweaving throughout that are all different. The 2nd episode sees the wind and piano play extremely contrasting material inquick alternations whilst the 3rd episode shows how the instruments can be balanced in a close environment producing a short canon. The work is relatively short and all sections are played without breaks each one heralded by asingle soft piano chord.
