This work is one of the most important organ compositions of the end of the nineteenth Century. It was written in the years 1894/95 though the earliest fragments date back to 1890. These had their origins in improvised Magnificat versets played by Widor at the inauguration of the Cavaillé-Coll organ of St. Ouen in Rouen. This new edition of the Wiener Urtext edition is based upon the first edition (no manuscript scores have survived) and on further editions published during Widor’s lifetime.A recording made in 1932 of Widor’s own playing has been studied in conjunction with the printed source materials. The varied ending played on that recording isincluded as an alternative. It bears witness to the composer’s improvisational treatment of his own work and the spirit in which the whole composition was originally conceived.

This pair of Organ works is clearly in Dyson’s later style when he displayed a leaner more modern aesthetic that is still tuneful and approachable.Twentieth century composer and educator George Dyson was a writer of ambitious and critically well-received works that due to their unfashionably accessible late Romantic style were allowed to languish and are now in the process of reassessment and renewed performance. However Dyson’s works for unison Voice and church music in particular his two settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis have remained active in the Anglican repertoire.

Matthias Weckmann, né en Niederdorla près de Mühlhausen (Thuringe) en 1616 et mort à Hambourg en 1674, a été formé en tant que musicien Heinrich Schütz par à Dresde, entre autres. Il a travaillé comme organiste à Dresde (Schloßkirche) et Hambourg (St. Jakobi). Il est particulièrement à l'orgue Jakobi qu'il a écrit ses oeuvres pour orgue élaborés et virtuose. Notre nouvelle édition du Tournoi des Maîtres de l'école d'orgue allemand du Nord 'de la série célèbre transfère fidèlement les oeuvres qui ont survécu à la lettre tablature, offrant un urtext fiable édité.
