Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is an American traditional carol by an anonymous composer. St. Nicholas is associated with a priest serving in Asia Minor who was consecrated as Archbishop in Myra, then was made a patron Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. Legend has it that he was generous and kind to children and practiced gift giving in secrecy at night. This charming, gentle tune blends well with Pachelbel's Canon in D, and performers are urged not to take a beginning tempo too fast that would rush the coming eighth notes. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar), rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment, strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

The theme Kommet, ihr Hirten, or Come, All Ye Shepherds, first presented in the style of a classical swing waltz, is followed by a tutti variation of the melody in 4/4 time, then by a tenor saxophone solo, and a return to the opening theme. The arrangement for saxophone quartet (AATBar) by Eberhard Michaely is written at a medium swing tempo.

Herbei, O Ihr Gläub'gen (Adeste fideles, or O Come, All Ye Faithful) has been arranged for saxophone quartet (AATBar) by Eberhard Michaely. After a rubato introduction, the groove in 5/4 time immediately sets in and runs through the remainder of the piece. The unusual time signature creates a flowing melody. The first alto part features a funky solo, which can be played ad lib or as written.

Unparalleled in scope, this groundbreaking series for E_Alto and B_Tenor offers a single collection of Repertoire and supporting materials written or arranged specifically for saxophone. With Repertoire spanning from the Baroque to contemporary eras, Recordings, Etudes, Technique, and Orchestral Excerpts, this comprehensive series serves as a balanced and organized pedagogical resource from the beginner to advanced levels of study. Nine progressive volumes of Repertoire expose students to original works and arrangements of diverse styles from W.A. Mozart to Violet Archer, with selected works by notable jazz artist Paul Desmon (Take Five), and living composer Phil Woods. Each level provides opportunities to explore Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary works, with original, unaccompanied selections from Levels 5 through 8 that use extended techniques such as multiphonics, key clicks, and bisbigliando. Earlier works pre-dating the origin of the saxophone have been carefully arranged with consideration of the unique quality of the instrument. Exposure to these works help to develop musicianship and an understanding of tonality, creating well-rounded and versatile performers. Selections written for both E_Alto and B_Tenor include piano accompaniments that function with both instruments.Eb Saxophone:Rhythmic Repertoire:The Birch Tree - Traditional Russian, arr. Angels We Have Heard on High, a popular Christmas song, is likely a traditional French carol. The lyrics refer to the Gospel of Luke's account of the birth of Christ. In that rendition, shepherds note that the newborn child is surrounded by a chorus of angels. The chorus of Angels We Have Heard on High features a memorable cascading effect of notes on the text Gloria in excelsis Deo, Latin for Glory to God in the highest. In this setting of the popular Christmas favorite, the melodic material has been carefully arranged for four saxophones (SATBar) by Bill Perconti.

Gloucestershire Wassail is associated with an English custom that was observed at Christmas time. A large, decorated bowl of spiced ale was hoisted through town by a group of carolers---Yule serenaders---in a tradition that has its roots in the beggars of the Middle Ages and Pagan festivals. The tune is therefore associated with Christmas revelry and joy. Gloucestershire Wassail probably dates from the 18th century, and is considered a traditional English tune. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar), rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment, strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing the melodic material. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

Dating from the 18th century, He Is Born, Holy Child is a traditional French carol. The composer and lyricist are anonymous, but translations of the texts have resulted in many references to music, including Sound the pipes, let the trumpets play, Play the oboes and bagpipes merrily, and Bells are ringing, we are singing. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar) strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material. All dynamics and articulations, minimally marked, should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

Patapan is a French carol attributed to Bernard de la Monnoye who lived from 1641--1728. The title refers to the beating of a drum, and the lyrics also mention other instruments (pipes, fife, and flute). As with many Christmas tunes, Patapan reflects the joyous union of Christmas music with dance, as the lyrics express, when you play your fife and drum, how can anyone be glum? The melody is complimented in this arrangement by the use of a lyrical folk song also used by Tchaikovsky in his 1812 Overture. This arrangement for saxophone quartet, rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment, strives to include all of the players by distributing the melodic material. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations. Arranged for saxophone quartet (SATBar).

Noels (the French spelling) are old but enduring carols that often tell a ballad-like story. Nowells (English spelling) are likely derived from and developed by English wandering minstrels. Both carols and nowells are often in 3/4 meter, lending themselveswell to dance. The First Nowell is one of a few carols that survived a ban on Christmas by the English Parliament in 1645. The tune is one of the oldest ballad carols, perhaps dating back to 1500, and likely originating in England. This arrangement of The First Nowell has multiple settings of the 3/4 time melody. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar)---rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment---strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material throughout the ensemble. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.
