Reviewed by Alphonse Hasselmans, each studies has a different difficulty level and can be played separately. This set of studies will help the harpist to gain in flexibility and speed, and would ideally be played on pedal harps. In the same series, Bochsa also composed a set of Forty Easy Studies, Op. 318, a set of Twenty Studies in two books and one called Fifty Studies, Op.34. All these sets have been reviewed by Alphonse Hasselmans, professor at the Paris Conservatoire, who also indicated the best finger positions to use.

“To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Fourteen Arabesque Studies for Flute will enable the pupil to attain brilliant technique on the instrument. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. The studies in Bozza's books prepare students for this most difficult rhythms and melodic writings. Furthermore, Fourteen Arabesque Studies contain virtuosic exercises including range, intervals, embouchure, breath control, phrasing, articulation, performance directions, dynamics and chromaticism, among other aspects. Being Arabesques, all Bozza's studies are exploited with complex rhythms and ornamentation, making for a unique and essential aid in the progression of advanced Flute studies.â€.

Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited Volume I of the Milde Concert Studies. They will add much to the Trombone study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship.Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not “concert†material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical etude book.bBr />I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the trombone while keeping the wide tessitura and the many clef changes of the original. Alternate positions are included to make the music more fluid. I have not indicated whether an alternate position is to be played slightly higher or lower. The trombonist should know what adjustments are needed, and adding the small sharps or flats would only clutter the notation. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding.Ralph Sauer.

Forty-Eight Virtuoso Studies, Vol. 2 by Marcel Moyse is the second and last volume of this series, tailored to upper-advanced flautists. Highly complex and challenging, this volume features 23 pieces, the studies 25 to 48, and will help the flautist to master and perfect their technique. It is a must-have for those who want to keep improving at higher levels. Considered as a maestro by his peers, Marcel Moyse has composed many flute methods and exercise books also published by Alphonse Leduc, such as, for the same level, 12 Studies in Virtuoso After Chopin and 10 Studies After Wieniawsky. His methods are widely used and recognised worldwide.

Similar to cyclic works the movements, which could also be described as performance pieces or concert studies, are each of different character. The fact that they were conceived as studies is manifest in that the composer elaborated a rhythmic idea or treated a technical problem in depth in each of them. The 'cast' of the setting changes, however: sometimes the ensemble falls into two parts, on other occasions the parts are imitating and of equal importance. The 'Six Studies' provide chamber music for intermediate and advanced pupils.

French flautist Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming a renowned performer on the instrument. He was also responsible for training a brilliant generation of flute players and his combined experience and expertise created the well-informed compilation, 50 Melodic Studies by Demersseman for Flute. With notes in French, English, German and Japanese, Moyse's studies are accessible and versatile. Focus in the second volume is given to fingering, phrasing, tempo, breath control, articulation, intervals, range, and ornamentation, among other musical aspects. 50 Melodic Studies for Flute, based on studies by flautist, Jules Demersseman (1833-1866) is essential to the technical progress of advanced flautists.

Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited 14 Bel Canto studies for Tuba or Bass Trombone by three Italian operatic masters: Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. These studies are in the style of vocalises, (having no words) and can be performed unaccompanied, or with their original accompaniments. The Bel Canto studies are from the same era as the famous Bordogni studies and can be used by intermediate performers. These 14 works are a wonderful addition to the Tuba or Bass Trombone repertoire and can be performed on recitals, auditions and juries.
