The piece is about observing the most diverse anxiety states in extreme degrees of emotional intensity, from slight distress up to acute panic attacks. What interests me here is not merely the musical realization of these phenomena, but grasping the energetic nature of those psycho-physical processes, emotions, reflexes, and proceedings. To this end, I'm seeking, at the clarinet myself, for an intimate sound world where expanded styles of playing in a flexible and permanently moving context appear. A very intensive music of the nerves, with a broad palette of psycho-physical emotions that, found in myself and my surroundings, are made audible. The title Psychogramm II has (as always) a subtitle: rettegos (fearful). In the order of increasingly emotional anxiety words, this stands for the highest level and means very great, profound anxiety, though in a grammatical form not in fact devitalizing the serious idea, but mitigating it a bit, not entirely without humor and somewhat childishly. Translation: Engl. (S. Wadsworth) (1988) / (Norbert Rubesaat) (1993); French (Jean-Pierre Wurtz) (1997) Place and time: Jail Munchen-Stadelheim, in the hour before the execution on 22nd February 1943 Characters: Sophie Scholl (soprano) / Hans Scholl (baritone or tenor) >>Weisse Rose<< (White Rose) was the name of the resistance group to which Hans and Sophie Scholl belonged. Udo Zimmermann's composition is characterized by the varying structure of its scenes: dramatic, visionary scenes, e.g. the remembered wartime experiences on the front, Sophie's anxiety about the removal of the children and the wish to see her parents one last time, contrast with contemplative monologues that are intended to provide insights into the individual's particular situation. The composer interweaves into the structure of the piece dream sequences with sudden bursts of anxiety that are not triggered by the execution that is about to take place but by the consequences of one's own actions. The result is a deliberate fusion of the various parts into one another. More than 100 different productions prove that the topic is as important as ever and that the work is both artistically rewarding and practicable. Udo Zimmermann About the piece Two young people, the siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl, are in a prison cell, one hour before they are to be put to death by their fascist executioners. Their christian convictions and sense of responsibility gave them the courage to put up resistance, resistance against the lies, the contempt for humanity and all human values. Sophie and Hans Scholl took their stand in the full knowledge that they were taking a deadly risk. They would simply not have been able to live with their feelings of shame had they not grasped the chance of fighting for what they believed in, even though it was a dangerous thing to do. Memories of past events, doubts, hopes and fears, justification of deeds and an acceptance of death, all these things happen and move in, and between, these two people during this representation of the hour before death. The orchestra provides a psycho-physical shorthand of their inner mental state. Musical effects and gestures search for their identity in human behaviour. The moments of stillness and silence provide moments of musical tension, which are just as powerful as the eruptions of fear and desperation. Musicians onstage stand in the limelight and enjoy their fame whereas after performance they become shrouded in a strange fog of isolation. Light is associated with ascent and descent: it can lead into brightness, but equally into darkness. Light can illuminate and yet bedazzling; fog stands for insecurity, uncertainty and anxiety ... but also for mysticism and wafting dreams. Somehow time stands still...

This work was commissioned by the Latvian choir Kamer within the framework of a large-scale project centered round the topic the sun. A poem by Paul de Brancion is interspersed with expressions and sayings taken from French folklore. The poetic text describing the contemporary anxiety that everything will be scorched by the sun as a result of global warming provides a response to popular opinion and cheerful idioms. The score is constructed like a descent into great depths, from the sunlight into darkness. The composition can also be combined with its sequel composition Au dessous des etoiles (Under the Stars) for mixed choir.Thierry Pecou.

Although specifically describing the uncertainty of approaching night and an evening prayer, Hymn at Twilight is actually about the human emotions of doubt, insecurity, hope and resolve. This solemn piece opens quietly and introduces a recurring four-note rising figure. Optimism, anxiety and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwind take up the chorale. The piece ends in a mood of sanguine optimism.

In this work, two feelings alternately surge up in waves. One is an urge to move towards a ray of light found during wandering in the sea, the other is a feeling of anxiety of not knowing what is waiting for me over the light. Can I get to an envisioned place after continous movement of the mind? Asking such a question to notes, I wrote this work. Masanori Aoyama.

This Shawn Mendes GRAMMY(r) Award-nominated song is superbly set for mixed voices as well as for men's choirs. Shawn wrote the song expressing his own struggle with anxiety. His positive, self-affirming lyrics express that Sometimes I feel like giving up, but I just can't. It isn't in my blood..

Kafka's ouvre is interspersed with moments of utter anxiety. Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him - I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear - could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. Looking out over dark ocean waters inspires feelings of awe and anxiety. It is the visceral thrill of the unknown that walks the razor’s edge of excitement and terror. Composer Matthew R. Putnam depicts just that with this riveting piece for young string musicians.
