Internationally renowned minimalist Philip Glass composed this Piano concerto in the traditional three-movement form. The first movement, titled ‘The Vision’ is classic Glass, with a steamroller quality that suggests theimmensedrive and ambition the two explorers needed to draw on for their journey into the wilderness. At the beginning of the second movement, the theme in the solo Indian Flute musically represents the name ‘Sacajawea’, theShoshoneIndian mother and guide who assisted the explorers on their way, for whom the movement is named. The final movement, entitled ‘The Land’, is an exploration of expansiveness, both of the land that was being explored, butalso of thegeologically expanded time over which the landscape has evolved, and the great changes that followed Lewis and Clark’s journey. This concerto is designated as part of The Concerto Project recording series started byGlass in theyear 2000, currently in four volumes and including eight concerti.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated, influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequentlyreferred to as aminimalist, though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas, among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach, are performed across the globe, and he has created workfor small andlarge ensembles, film and experimental theatre, and founded his own performing group, The Philip Glass Ensemble.

The Not-Doings of an Insomniac - Partita for Solo Double Bass with spoken texts - was premiered by Robert Black at the International Society of Bassist Convention at the Griffin Concert Hall in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Not-Doings of an Insomniac developed as a result of Philip Glass's frequent travels to unfamiliar cities and different time-zones, changes that often bring on bouts of insomnia. While on a trip in Europe in 2015, Glass decided to turn these redundant waking hours into something useful, and one of the results is this Partita for Solo Double Bass, written for Robert Black of Bang on a Can All-Stars fame. The piece is written in seven movements, each with its own title: Not Dreaming, Tasting, Smelling, Hearing, Seeing, Touching respectively, and finishing with Not Beginning. Not Ending. What raises this set into something atmospheric and theatrical are the poems in between each movement. These are by Glass's friends or associates, and the texts by Lou Reed, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and Arthur Russell are read on the recording of this work by Robert Black.

At this premiere, the violinist was Robert McDuffie, for whom the Concerto was composed. During the summer and autumn of 2009, Glass composed this work after many years of exchanges with McDuffie. His idea of creating a work that would be influenced by, and an accompaniment to Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. Black light is defined as infrared or ultraviolet light which is invisible to the naked eye. The idea of an entire spectra existing out of the range of human perception was a large influencing factor for George Sweet in the composition of this piece. Richly scored for the modern concert band, Black Light is written in a post-minimalist style and is also heavily influenced by the work of American composers Steve Reich, John Adams, and Philip Glass.Black light is defined as infrared or ultraviolet light which is invisible to the naked eye. The idea of an entire spectra existing out of the range of human perception was an influencing factor on the composition of the piece. Black Light is written in a post-minimalist style and is also heavily influenced by the work of American composers Steve Reich, John Adams, and Philip Glass. This begins with strict motor accompaniment. Take care to maintain equal balance among the different “moving parts†so that they blend to create a solid whole both here and throughout the piece. The primary thematic material is stated by the trumpets and horns at m. 12. This material is the basis for much of the harmonic and thematic material that follows. A slightly varied statement of the main theme is presented again at m. 26 with a different type of motor accompaniment. This leads to a B-section at m. 44, which is a bold fanfare-like presentation of the main material. Another series of variations on the main theme begins at m. 50 and incorporates many different textural and harmonic ideas in the accompaniment. Once again, be careful to not let any one “moving part†overwhelm another and keep the texture evenly balanced.  A second, broader presentation of the B-section occurs at m. 90 and leads to a subdued C-section at m. 100 with new melodic material presented in the trumpet. A whimsical march-like section pushes to the return of the introductory motor material at m. 131. A final heroic presentation of the main thematic material results in a somewhat ambiguous coda, which brings the piece to a dramatic conclusion.
