Entrance of the Gladiators is a military march composed in 1897 and soon after was also subtitled Thunder and Blazes. It has become a legendary screamer march for circuses to introduce the clowns. The march is in three sections with some very lyrical moments followed by the chromatic break section featuring the low brass. The final trio section is also lyrical and chromatic at the same time. When played as a screamer the tempo is often taken to extremes.Wes Ballenger has done an amazing job of arranging this famous march for a virtuosic Trombone quintet.

Bagatelle was commissioned in 2016 by bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton as a companion piece to Pledge (2010). The piece is in A minor, and opens with a determined march-like theme shared by both instruments. The following section uses an ascending Dorian mode scale as its primary motif, before merging this theme with the opening march melody. The bass trombone and piano share equally important roles in the work. The piece is titled Bagatelle, as it is a short and unpretentious work. Shane Lamb's new work Bagatelle for Bass Trombone and Piano challenges both performers with different colors and expressive moods. About 4 minutes in length, this work is very appropriate for advanced intermediate performers. The range is modest and there is a muted section as well as a rubato cadenza-like section for the soloist.

Bernard Scherr has arranged six lovely Portuguese Folksongs for Brass Quintet entitled: 1. Mourisca do Santo Joao de Braga (Moorish architechture of Saint John of Braga) as a march 2. A Pastorinha (The Shepherdess) - a lovely andantino 3. O Xi-Xi (Wee-wee) - a silly song 4. O ai, o linda! (Oh, the beauty!) - a lyrical romance 5. Coradinha (The blushing one) - a dance-like jaunt 6. Carro amaricano (American Car) - driving around in the auto These Portuguese folksongs contain many words and phrases that are associated with certain regions of Portugal. These folksongs come from northern Portugal and were collected during the first half of the 20th century. They represent, though, an earlier tradition stretching back into the 19th century and earlier. Some of these titles are terms of endearment (A Pastorinha, O Xi-Xi, and O ai, o linda), of something new and exciting (Carro amaricano), of dance (Coradinha), or of something that is not easily translated (Mourisca-referring either to architecture, a dance, or a local folk deity). These arrangements capture the charming melodies, woven throughout the group, and contain inventive harmonies and imitations. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone & Tuba. For advanced performers.

Trombone & Piano Duration: 17' Composed: 2013 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC …the audience loved Red Dragonfly. Definitely a keeper in my repertoire! Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. Difficulty Level: Trombone 6 (Professional) Piano 5 (Advanced) See also Red Dragonfly, Concerto for Trombone and Band for the version with band accompaniment. See composer website for audio sample.

Clarke is sitting in the front row 5th in from the right with his moustache and his Cornet on his lap. He assuredly composed this solo to perform on that tour. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is only seen from the southern hemisphere and features the five stars of the Cross from the 1901 design of the Australian flag. This 5-minute virtuosic arrangement by Geoffrey Bergler features not only the Cornet, but a bit of all the other four members of the Brass Quintet.Instrumentation is for:2 Trumpets in B-flat (Trumpet 1 solo, Trumpet 2 also plays Piccolo)Horn,TromboneTuba/Bass TromboneThe sound track below features Mr. Bergler from his student days as Cornet soloist
