û¿Zatten was commissioned in 2005 by Trumpeter Paul Neebe during the composer's vacation to do ancestral research in the town of Zatten, currently part of Poland.Roger Petrich writes the following about his Zatten Concerto for Trumpet:The 'DNA' of this compostion tracks back to my great-grandfather and the tiny Plattdeutsch village where he was born. Zatten, [then] located in the eastern part of Berlin/Brandenburg is in an area of forest and small farms dating back to the 1600's. My grandfather R. T. Petrich, whose initials I bear, was six years old when he, along with his parents, sister, and older brother left Prussia to start a new life in the USA.My own childhood memories include many visits to the family homestead in Dakota Territory, where I used to play in the barn which hosted many summer dances. The Dakota sky was vast by day, and nights could become magical with the addition of the Northern Lights. Though not a professional musician, my father kept up his trumpet playing all his life. In a special way it was his voice - a sound that deeply imprinted all my growing up years. All of this is mixed together in my Zatten ConcertoThe Zatten Concerto is in three movements, the two outer movements faster and the middle is a Largo. This work is appropriate for advanced performers. The title Zatten (the name of the small village in Germany where his family was located before immigrating to the USA) is spelled out in Morse Code in the very opening eight bars of the work. The Concerto is originally written for Trumpet and String Orchestra, this version using a reduction for Piano.

Of all the hundreds of melodies composed by Franz Schubert, Serenade or Standchen stands out as one of the most sublime. It was written in 1826 as a lied or song for solo voice and piano using text from Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. Keith Terrett has beautifully scored the song for Trumpet in B-flat and Piano. It is appropriate for intermediate level performers.

A contribution to make the classical period accessible to the trumpet: Of medium difficulty, Kristin Thielemann's arrangements of performance pieces and sonatas by James Hook (1746-1827) are ideal for tuition as well as for auditions and competitions. Several songs of Hook were arranged as instrumental pieces and serve as a good start into this repertoire. More advanced players may try thesonatas. Apart from the frequently played Sonata Op. 99/3, even lesser known sonatas might be interesting for the trumpet because oftheir well-chosen keys.

“André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet was composed in 1955, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet. The piece requires high, virtuosic skills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced trumpeters, Jolivet provides an exciting, different piece for the instrument's repertoire.â€.

“Composed by Henri Tomasi, this version of Holy week in Cuzco is arranged for Trumpet and Piano (or Organ). Dedicated to Maurice André, this piece is difficult and requires the skills of an advanced Trumpet player. This work sounds really nice and would work very well for a recital. It is divided in three main movements, the third one being a repetition of the main theme (first movement). Henri Tomasi also composed a variety of concerti for Alto Saxophone and for Trombone, as well as some ballades.â€.

“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.
