In Tampere, Finland, surprisingly many, relatively young and active composers with their own distinctive voice are making their mark. This would not be possible without Jouni Kaipainen, the grand old man of the Tampere scene. He was both a lecturer at the Tampere Music Academy and the composer-in-residence for the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a true Tampere culture person an inspiration to the younger generation. Jouni's passing was a moment of deep grief for all of us in Tampere - we are left with sadness and longing. Tommi Hyytinen commissioned a sonata for horn and piano from me at around that time, so I decided to dedicate the work in Jouni's memory. The work passes through different emotions and sections within the rather wide-arched sonata form. The final movement is very much in memoriam Jouni Kaipainen. This sonata continues my project to write sonatas for each solo instrument and piano.

This short work entitled Le Basque (the Basque) was often used by the late great horn virtuoso Dennis Brain as an encore piece. Peter Knudsvig has adapted it for solo horn and quartet accompaniment. For this arrangement of Wiegenlied, Johan Brahms? famous melody was used as the starting point and combined with an alpine horn call. The intention here is not to undermine the original but to pay homage to Brahms? ability to write a ?hit? melody. I simply can't say it better than the Doc himself. Read what he says about the Pivot System, then grab some samples, then a physical book shipped right to your home above. From the Forward During the initial or formative years of a player's career, he acquires the mechanical habits which determine the extent of his development invariably by pure chance. If he happens to be numbered among the few fortunate ones who unconsciously utilize their physical factors to advantage, eventually someone will mistakenly refer to him as being a 'natural' or 'born with it.' If, as is more likely the case, he happens to be one whose physical factors clash or function incorrectly, he inadvertently seals his own fate. Either he can give up shortly after high school as most do, or he can continue down the blind alley of his own circumscribed potential. Most of these unfortunates merely resign themselves to a career of mediocrity ('I never had the chops'), shying away (rom the 'lead book' in favor of second, third or fourth parts. A few (even worse) go on mouthpiece jags or scavenger hunts for no pressure systems, etc. , always seeking, but never finding the 'gimmick' which will 'straighten out my chops.' Some, however, after a thorough analysis, adopt the scientific principles which utilize every one of their playing factors with maximum efficiency.
