Otto M. Schwarz is endeavoring to contribute new ideas to concert band literature. He has contributed in the field of multimedia (Asteroid) and with his many compositions in symphonic/modern arrangement (Jazz Waltz No 1 Fire and Ice or Band Fever). His new composition Funk Attack is as the name suggests a piece in funk style. Otto M. Schwarz first gained his experience in his style in the 8o?s transcribing numbers by famos Amerarican bands including 'Earth Wind and Fire' 'Tower of Power'' and the British slap idol 'Mark King' (Level 42). Funk attack is atypical of 'the concert band scene' and requires absolute precision in phrasing and rhythm. Without the support of agreat percussion groove the orchestra plays an interlocked theme in the central section in style of recent American Big Bands. Otto M. Schwarz dedicated this work to 'Alexander Veit and Symphonic Winds'.

In a Persian Market was composed in 1920 by English composer Albert W. Ketèlby. It is a short tone poem that describes the hustle and bustle taking place at a busy exotic Persian bazaar. Camel herders beggars a princess jugglers snake charmers and a myriad of others fill the musical scenes. The princess and her caravan eventually pass by and all is back to normal. Tohru Takahashi’s arrangement perfectly conveys the sights sounds and smells of a Persian market.

When the Second World War began the British March King Kenneth J. Alford (pseudonym for Major F. J. Ricketts R.M.) was increasingly in bad health and had composed relatively little music recently. As Hitler's armies marched victoriously across Europe Britain was soon alone facing the Nazi peril. Alford's great contribution to the war effort was the composition of two of his great masterpieces ARMY OF THE NILE celebrating the first Allied victories over the Germans in North Africa and EAGLE SQUADRON. The latter of these marches celebrates American airmen who travelled to England during the early years of the war (before the entry of the United States into the conflict) tovolunteer for service with the Royal Air Force serving with great distinction during the Battle of Britain. Alford skillfully weaves a number of well-known tunes into the fabric of the music including the Royal Air Force March and The Star-Spangled Banner while also including a reference to the Siegfried motive from Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Mark Rogers' edition of this classic march includes a handsome full score and concert size set of parts.

Darius Milhaud's West Point Suite for Concert Band. Score and parts.Darius Milhaud was commissioned to compose a work especially for the West Point Sesquicentennial celebration marking150 years of progress at the United States Military Academy. Accepting the invitation Milhaud visited West Point in the fall of 1951 to acquire the neccessary information and atmosphere for such a work. His WestPoint Suite was first performed by the United States Military Academy Band conducted by Major Francis E. Resta Commanding Officer and Director of Music in Carnegie Hall New York on January 5 1952.

Voyage au Centre de la Terre-This composition was based on the world-famous novel by the French author Jules Verne. This novel describes the attempt to reach the centre of the earth. The descent of the crater of the volcano called Snaeffels situated in Iceland marks thebeginning of this voyage to the sublunary world. The German geologist professor Lidenbrock is accompanied on this trip by his nephew Axel and an Icelandic guide named Hans. The last mentioned will be helpful in many occasions. Dark colors & mist The composer tried in this single work to give a musical expression to various significant moments from this novel. In the introduction he sketches an image of the dismal ambience on the island by using dark colors. Risingfragments of mist reveal the flanks of the monumental mountain Scataris. The composer tries to catch this image in a majestic and broad chorale. Away from Iceland Subsequently the ostinato rhythmicity and virtuosity representthe hectic descent of the crater of the volcano. The party descends ever more and more and travels south away from Iceland. On the way they see all kinds of rock formations fossils and minerals. At a depth of thirty hours walking distance atabout 150 kilometers below the surface they reach a sub terrestrial sea which is called the Lidenbrock sea. Genuine eruption of sounds Strange electric manifestations and unpredictable weather conditions accompany thissingular phenomenon. An orchestral tutti-episode expresses this impression musically. On a make-shift raft the party continues its voyage heading to the south coast of this huge sea. Once ashore an enormous rock obstructs the passage. The blowingup of this obstacle unleashes a genuine eruption of sounds in the orchestration. Spat out by the volcano But the explosion has an unforeseen side effect. The sea - travelers and raft included - is sucked upwards into a dark hole.Again our heroes are accompanied on their involuntary voyage while left to fend for themselves by an ever increasing ostinato rhythmicity. Before an irruption can destroy the raft the threesome manages to escape and climb up through acave towards the daylight. They seem to be spat out by the Stromboli volcano on the island of Sicily far from home. The composition ends with triumphant sounds that represent the scientific triumph of these adventurers.

Movement 1 is based on El Tortillero (The Tortilla Vendor), and is very creatively scored including the joyful dissonance of a busy street corner. The heartfelt and poignant second movement makes a pleasant contrast, and the Allegro Festivo marking for the third movement means more fun in the sun, including wonderful Percussion parts. In Scotland the monster of Loch Ness is a hot issue but the American state of Montana enjoys a comparable phenomenon going by the name of Montana Nessie. In the western part of this remote state lies Flathead Lake: a lake of 45 kilometres /38miles in lenght and 24 kilometres /15 miles breath. At several places its depth exeeds 100 metres.Nessies discovery takes us back to the year 1889 when captain James Kerr aboard the passengership U.S.Grant was startled by a ship unknown to himsuddenly approaching his vessel across Flathead Lake. However it turned out not to be a ship but an undefinable animal of immense size.From that moment onwards life would never be the same again in and around Flathead Lake.The composer wasinspired by the story and summarized the events into a symphonic poem but from a surprising angle:that of the monster. The exiting opening allows us to follow the monster in its natural surroundings.The fast follow-up movement depictsMontana Nessie trotting and frolicking about the Montana woods and prairies.From its abode it thorougly enjoys everything around it. This period abruptly ends in a short climax (Chimes). The solo for cor anglais marks a new period in themonsters life.The presence of people has a paralizing effect and the apprehensive atmosphere of the slow movement may be felt profoundly.The monster observes and mildly teases the ship. Abhor sounds force the ship to a withdrawal.The movingmusical continuation depicts the triumphant monster dancing an ironic waltz. The monsters fear and anger at the intrusion of his freedom run through the piece like continuous threads and develop into the works final theme.
