He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3710400.

In his Passion oratorio Christus am Olberge [The Mount of Olives], Beethoven succeeded firstly in building on the 18th century tradition, and secondly in putting his own personal stamp on the nascent genre of German-language oratorio - the Vienna performances of Haydn's Die Schopfung and Die Jahreszeiten had only taken place a few years earlier. In composing the work he looked towards contemporary opera, using a text by an opera librettist to depict in music the dramatic situation of the doubting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest. Yet we do not do justice to Beethoven's work if we simply regard it as a successor work to Graun's Der Tod Jesu or even Bach's St Matthew Passion. Beethoven's Christus am Olberge is characterized less by religious devotion and much more by the dramatic realization of a specific situation in the Passion story in deeply-felt musical scenes. With its magnificent, almost operatic music, this is a different Passion oratorio which is definitely worth hearing and experiencing - and in this form it is without doubt unique in the history of vocal-instrumental sacred music. The edition follows the first printed edition in music and text; differences in the text in the libretto originally set by Beethoven are given as a second text, and a singable English translation is underlaid. Score available separately - see item CA.2302000.

Pietro Metastasio's libretto to azione sacra La Passione di Gesu Cristo (1730) is a prototype for the Italian Catholic oratorio of the 18th century, in which the Biblical text is entirely transformed into free verse. Originally written for Antonio Caldara, the text has been set to music many times. However, the famous poet wrote in a letter to the 26-year-old composer that the setting, in the style of Italian Opera seria, was the most expressive music that has ever been written for this poem. German and English translations of the libretto are provided in this edition.

Cantata BWV 127 belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which Bach performed in 1724/25 in Leipzig. It bears close links to the St John Passion, which was performed on Good Friday 1725 in its second version. In formal terms and in the interpretation of the text and its orchestration, it is one of the most astonishing vocal works by Bach. The opening chorus, with its multi-layered construction, is nothing less than a preliminary version for the chorale fantasia O Mensch bewein dein Sunde gross. The aria Die Seele ruht in Jesu Handen is distinguished by its exquisite scoring: a solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, whilst the background comprises delicate chords on recorders and continuo, intended to symbolize funeral bells. A solo trumpet gives the following movement particular brilliance. The words Ich breche mit starker und helfender Hand unmistakably anticipate the chorus Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden from the St Matthew Passion. New revised edition. An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ..
