Saul, published for the first time in the version conducted by Handel himself. Saul is one of the most dramatic of Handel's oratorios. To a greater extent than almost any other oratorio it reveals with its gripping dramatic power its proximity to opera of its time. The score demands what was at the time Handel's most varied orchestra. The normal opera orchestra of the day was augmented by trombones, harp, solo organ, carillon (Glockenspiel) and large kettledrums. The choir functions for the first time as a central participant in dramatic action, while also undertaking commentating functions as in a Greek tragedy. This new edition makes use for the first time of musical material revealed by the latest Handel research, based as its most important source on the conducting score from which Handel himself directed his performances. Only this research has shown which arias, choruses, recitatives and instrumental pieces, after he had made numerous corrections in his autograph, Handel chose for his performances, and in what order they were given. The result has produced, apart from many changes of details (e.g. autograph instructions concerning the use of the organ), uncommon ordering of individual pieces, and passages with altered notes. The extraordinarily high reputation among Handel's contemporaries of his Passion Oratorio to words by Brockes is indicated by the fact that no less eminent a musician than Johann Sebastian Bach himself made a copy of this work. Although Bach copied it without making substantial changes in it, our edition of the work brings together two of the greatest baroque composers. The Brockes Passion was - not only for the Leipzig Thomaskantor - an alternative to the betterknown Bach Passions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5504800.

Handel’s “Deidamia†was premièred on 10 January 1741 only a few weeks after “Imeneoâ€.The librettist Paoli Rolli , a previously unsucessful librettist for Handel, delivered with his finest work “Deidamiaâ€. On 10 February 1741 the third and final opera performances of this work took place under Handel’s direction. Oddly enough “Deidamia†would not be performed again until the beginning of the 20th century. This opera is based on the themes of humour and seriousness. The personal harmonising of Heroism (Achilles) and Love ( Deidamia ) build on the essential dramatic features of this work. “Deidamia†is the last great opera in a series of masterpieces: “Orlandoâ€, “Poroâ€, “Ezioâ€, “Ariodanteâ€, “Alcinaâ€, “Serse†and “Imeneoâ€. The vocal score is based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Editon.

Our source for the present edition of his Missa ad octo voces inaequales, Op. 65 is that issued in 1920 by the London firm of Bayley & Ferguson. This was not the work's first outing, however. In 1918, Bailey & Ferguson published a setting of this mass in English (Communion Service: Mass in C, for Eight Voices a Cappella, Op. 65, also published by Crescendo Music Publications), with movements ordered according to the Prayer Book. Perhaps to allow the work a larger audience, Henschel slightly modified the music to fit the Latin syllabification and reordered the movements, but essentially the work is as it was two years earlier. Our edition includes a full list of editorial changes and corrections. Also available is a version which omits the Credo, for churches where it is sung congregationally.

The Dettinger Te Deum was written to celebrate England's victory over the French at the Battle of Dettingen. It is Handel's last and most successful setting of the Te Deum and reveals a deep understanding of the English church music tradition. The sound impact of this broadly conceived work is governed by the choirs in an almost theatrical exegesis of the text. Particularly striking are several borrowings from the Messiah which Handel had just completed. This edition, edited by Baroque specialist Amanda Babington, is based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition.* First Urtext edition* Includes a Foreword (Eng/Ger).

Dixit Dominus is not only Handel's first important church work, but it also exceeds the scope and design of both of his other Latin psalm settings. Although the exact time and occasion for the first performance is not clear, today the universality of this work make it ideal for use in festive worship services or in concerts. With Dixit Dominus Handel's complete Latin psalm settings are now available from Carus-Verlag in critical editions. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5523200.

Handel's Vesper psalm Nisi Dominus HWV 238, was composed in Rome in 1707 for the Feast of the Madonna del Monte Carmel. It is entirely in the tradition of the polychoral, concertante motet which was cultivated especially in Rome during the late baroque era. In spite of the liturgical brevity required for the individual movements, this setting of Psalm 127, presented here in a new critical edition, is impressive on account of the festive fullness of the sound, the charming contrasts in the alternating scoring and, typical for Handel, the power of the images and the conciseness of the musical material. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5523800.
