Je suis honoré d'écrire quelques mots à propos d'un des plus grands pianistes, Kenny Barron. Il a été une figure importante de la scène New Yorkaise durant quarante ans et il fait partie de l'élite des pianistes de jazz dans le monde.
J'ai tout d'abord rencontré Mr Barron en 1977 dans un haut lieu du duo piano/basse, au Bradley's, dans Greenwich Village. Je l'ai entendu à Cincinnati (dans la ville où j'habitais) en 1974 avec le Quartette de Yusef Lateef et fus très impressionné. Au Bradley's, il était chaleureux et a été très encourageant avec moi, pianiste de 21 ans récemment arrivé à Big Apple (New York). Le moment venu, il me laissa m'asseoir avec son bassiste, le grand Buster Williams - ce fut un réel plaisir.
Lorsque j'ai commencé à réaliser des CD pour le bénéfice de Classical Action : Performing Arts Against AIDS, dans le début des années 90, je lui ai demandé de participer au second enregistrement Fred Hersch and Friends : The Duo Album en jouant un duo avec moi. Cette organisation collecte des fonds vraiment nécessaires pour les services de personnes atteintes du Sida et la prévention. Kenny, sans attendre, donna de son temps et joua magnifiquement. Nous avons également joué à deux pianos à New York au Town Hall et deux fois au Jazz Standard, pour mon plus grand plaisir. C'est un partenaire merveilleux et compréhensif, disposé à tout essayer. Bien qu'il soit difficile de l'identifier, et je ne veux le mettre dans aucune sorte de boîtes, je perçois son style comme étant en grande partie influencé par McCoy Tyner (les lignes longues et claires) et Tommy Flanagan (le phrasé et l'utilisation de l'espace). Il a réussi à obtenir le statut rare de maître du jazz par la vertu de sa longévité, sa profondeur et sa musicalité. Nous partageons tous les deux une passion pour la musique de Monk, Strayhorn et de l'American Popular Songbook et nous sommes tous les deux de grands partisans de l'idée de rendre ce que nous avons absorbé en enseignant aux jeunes pianistes et en devenant leurs mentors.
En plus, il a une personnalité chaleureuse et engageante - il est d'un grand soutien, a un grand sens de l'humour et une attitude posée. Péter Wolf (a doctoral graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest) has composed a number of large-scale compositions in recent years which have had success at the hands of distinguished performers: these include two piano concertos as well as concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin. By entitling his newest set of pieces for piano Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, the composer was able to simultaneously indulge in wordplay based upon his surname and give a tip of the hat to German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. The work's likeness to Bach is not limited to its title - the manner in which a piece has been written in both major and minor keys for each tone of the chromatic scale is blatantly inspired by Bach. In the preface to this publication, Wolf offers the following insights: ''I think I managed to find expressive titles. The first piece, Epiclesis (a prayer for inspiration, patience, and support), was heard from above: I was able to work continuously and without inhibitions. The works could be born in every key, until the last one, the Epilogue, was completed. When I finally finished inscribing the pitches of Bach's name, I admit, a little shiver went through me.'' Of the character pieces, all were completely new with the exceptions of one being previously written and another whose theme Wolf borrowed from one of his own stage works. Sept pièces pour piano. Par LAKS SIMON. Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the ?École de Paris?. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the ?Association of Young Polish Musicians?, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de l?Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore ? homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak?s enchanting drama music.
