According to the date inscribed in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's autograph score, the present mass was composed in March 1780. The instrumental setting (oboes, trumpets and timpani add color and festive splendor to the work) rightly suggests that the work was in all likelihood performed with the Church Sonata K. 336 at the Easter high mass in the Salzburg cathedral. Since Archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo wanted the mass text to be treated as succinctly as possible, Mozart offered him a richly orchestrated Missa solemnis in the terse form of a Missa brevis. The brilliant, festive character of the Mass K. 337 is abruptly interrupted by a powerful Benedictus in a harsh A minor, the most striking and revolutionary movement in all of Mozart's Masses, in the strictest contrapuntal style ... (Alfred Einstein). What could have inspired Mozart to such unexpected rigor? But there is another surprise yet: while the dark drama of the Holy Week seems to radiate from this Benedictus, the following Agnus Dei in the distant key of E flat major sounds, with its soprano solo and concertante oboe, bassoon and organ, like a song of thanksgiving filled with the warmth and light of Easter.Other features worth noting are the three unisons between the alto and bass heard at the Deus pater omnipotens in the Gloria (bars 22-32), the a cappella illumination of the words Jesu Christe found a little later (bar 62) and the descending chromaticism evocative of death at the Crucifixus in the Credo. (Incidentally, Mozart had initially planned a different movement for the Credo of this mass, superscribed Tempo di Chiaconna; he wrote out 136 bars but, for some unknown reason, never completed it.)While the Coronation Mass K. 317 of 1779 is one of Mozart's most well-known mass settings, its later composed frllow piece K. 337 - Mozart's last completed mass before the great C minor fragment K. 427 (417a) - has been paid less attention, even though it is an outstanding example of the Mozartian mass type and contains parallels to the Coronation Mass in its disposition and in the structure of its various movements. The score and piano reduction of this new edition were prepared on the basis of the autograph (Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek/Vienna, dass. no. Mus. Hs. 18 97512) and the Salzburg performance material (Staats- und Stadtbibliothek/Augsburg, dass. no. Hl. Kreuz 9). We wish to thank both libraries for putting the source material at our disposal.Franz Beyer, Munich, Spring 1998.

Somber for piano (2017) was commissioned by Ville Hautakangas. The composer sees the character of the work autumnal, as often in his compositions. The fast middle section is related to Turriago's first piano sonata, and his passion for jazz is clearly audible. Somber has many tempo changes and a built-in restlessness. The career of the composer, pianist and conductor Tuomas Turriago (b. 1979) has been very versatile, the main motivator being a passion for music, regardless of instrument, style or genre. As a pianist, he has focused on chamber music, and has worked as a lecturer in collaborating piano at Tampere Music Academy since 2004. He has been soloist of various Finnish orchestras and has performed at numerous music festivals in Finland and all over Europe, the US, Colombia, Near East and Far East.

In the summer of 1913 Satie once more poked fun at himself and the world of music with a set of parodic piano pieces on various marine animals, giving it the grotesque title “Embryons desschs†(Desiccated Embryos). The notation without barlines, the ‘stories’ beneath the music and the spoofsof well-known pieces of music, most strikingly the Funeral March from Chopin’s Piano “Sonata in B-flat minorâ€, make the work a barrel of musical fun. This Urtext edition faithfully adheres to the sources and reflects the latest findings of Satie scholarship. It contains translations of all of Satie’s French texts, practical page-turns, notes on performance practice by Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher and an informative Foreword. The pieces range from an easy to moderate level of difficulty and provide an ideal additional varied repertoire for teaching purposes.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra violist Randolph Kelly had premiered Adler's Viola Concerto in 2000, but the orchestra's artistic management preferred that he not perform a contemporary work for his next solo appearance. With that guideline, Kelly contacted Adler, the master of orchestration, to arrange the Brahms Sonata in F minor, Opus 120 for viola and orchestra. In this new setting, The piece promises to bring the lush romantic strains of the famous sonata to a larger audience without upsetting the purists. Now that the manuscripts of the organ sonatas have resurfaced, it has finally become possible to form an acquaintance with the major part of Giacomo Puccini's early compositions in Lucca, which until now were known only from anecdotes. The present selection with 12 works sheds light on this segment of his oeuvre, scheduled to appear in a complete single-volume scholarly edition in the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini (ENOGP, II/2.1).

Confluence was commissioned by the Organ Artist Series of Pittsburgh in celebration of its twentieth anniversary in 1999. Christa Rakich gave the premier at the closing concert of the season at Calvary Episcopal Church by in April of 1999. It has been performed frequently since that time. The title was given to honor the joining together or confluence of the three rivers of Pittsburgh: the Allegheny, the Monongalela, and the Ohio. Confluence is a curious hybrid related to both the sonata and rondo forms. It is of the ABABA design with the final A quite extended by polyphonic games and a very noisy and triumphant epilogue. The first idea is driving, rhythmic, nervous and agitated. The second is quiet, gentle and pastoral, that slowly moves in its mysterious ways, closing with a plaintive row of a dozen different pitches. The composer delights in the challenge of making tone rows as approachable and sing-able as possible. Both ideas make slightly varied restatements. At the end, fugal exploitation of the first idea is followed by that row, entering with stentorian grandeur in full pedal, heralding the triumphant close. This row, like the month of March is referred to frequently as coming in like a Iamb, going out like a lion.

EPTA-Norge onsket a bidra til at klaverelever pa mellom-trinnetskulle fa noen helt nye stykker a spille!

Hele verket bygger pa motivene i de to forstetakter.
For her ligger utfordringen!

Fresh from the success of his Sonata for Flute and Piano (114-40463), and with some prodding by Sir James Galway, Liebermann went on to produce a trifecta of flute concerti - the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra (416-41186), the Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra (416-41174), and, here, the Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra. Commissioned by harpist Hyun Sun Na, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony, and the Dallas Symphony, the Concerto was given its world premiere in 1995 by Galway (flute), Kathy Kienzel (harp), and the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Edo de Waart. The Concerto's premiere recording was by Galway (flute), Hyun Sun Na (harp), and the London Mozart Players conducted by Lowell Liebermann.

At first sight, this publication appears to merely be a collection of pieces due to the lack of drier technical studies that are characteristic of tutors. Yet the selection of the works, their order according to the development of ensemble playing, and the advice towards technical realization included after the foreword - these all make this publication a tutor. The works form a cross-section of a longer period of the history of chamber music and offer an insight into the different methods of composition.Volume II introduces the Baroque trio sonata through the works of the greatest masters (Vivaldi, Corelli, Albinoni, F. Couperin, Purcell and Bach). The two violin parts do not gobeyond the 3rd position nor the cello parts beyond the 4th position.

The “Easy Concert Pieces†series for Violin and Piano is intended for tuition purposes and are particularly suitable for performanceat auditions and school concerts, for competitions, examinations - and for music making at home too, of course. Recordings and backing tracks for all the pieces are included on the accompanying Audio-Download. Volume 3 (intermediate) requires familiarity withthe first four positions. Besides well-known works such as the famous Air by Bach, the Largo from Handel's opera “Xerxes†and a movement from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, there are rewarding concerto and sonata movements by Küchler and Fiocco, as well as less familiar Romantic compositions by Rieding and Trowell. Modern music is represented in two lovely pieces by Hermann Schroeder, also inspired by the theme of the seasons. Young violinists will enjoy the four pop pieces that round off the selection.
