I Will Bow And Be Simple from 'Three Shaker Tunes' arranged by Betty Jacobson fo...(+)
I Will Bow And Be Simple from 'Three Shaker Tunes' arranged by Betty Jacobson for SSA choir with Piano accompaniment.'The form of worship practiced by the Shakers in New England has been a subject of curiosity for more than a century and a half. The Shakers originated in the English Quaker Church and came to America in 1774 and settled in New England and in New York state. They still exist in some communities in these territories. The Shaker songs took on a lively spontaneity and a cross between Quaker orderliness and wild abandonment that characterised the rituals of the French prophets from whom the Shakers distantlystemmed. The Shakers exercised in dancing shaking and whirling until they went into trances and 'recieved songs as gifts.'The songs are derived from 'spirit manifestations' and all have individual types of rhythms and texts.' - Edward D. Andrews from 'Shaker Songs' The Musical Quarterly October 1937
