'Romance for violin and piano is a short reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.'???????????? - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981 Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. Edited by Ron Erickson. Sonata No.4 completed in 1948 was entitled 'No. 2' by Antheil. It appears from the list of workds he made in 1944 that of the works from the Paris years he wanted to consolidate the Sonata No. 1 withthe third and ignore the second so that all the violin and piano sonatas before 1940 would be known as one work - called Sonata No. 1. Modern notation conventions have been adapted to Antheil's chromatic-polytonal language inorder to make the text as definite and as readable as possible. In this edition poytonal key signatures sometimes are substituted for masses of accidentals.

Vivaldi achieved popularity throughout Europe with his collection “L’estro armonico” Op.3. He wrote the cycle which consists of twelve violin concertos (including Concerto Op.3 No.3 featured here) for the orchestra of the “Ospedale della Pietà” where he was teacher and director for many years. The two fast outer movements from opus 3/3 feature ritornelli combined with more virtuosic solo sections as was prevalent at the time. This ritornello form gives structure to the movements. It also gives the student who plays both the solo and tutti sections in this edition the opportunity to vary the returning motives interms of dynamics and ornamentation. In the short but expressive Largo distinct quarter notes alternate with patterns of sixteenth across all the strings. This allows the student to practise various bowing techniques.

Edward Huws Jones explains that ?during the heyday of sail the busiest sea-routes of all were the North Atlantic crossings especially between Liverpool and the American cotton ports; it was the heady mixture of African-American and Irish music which gave birth to the mid-century flowering of the sea shanty. Meanwhile English-speaking vessels were sailing to the Cape India Australia and many other far-flung destinations carrying a two-way traffic of song and dance.?Thetunes in this collection can all be played as unaccompanied Fiddle tunes which is how they would have been played in the days of sail. The violin pupil can be accompanied either by the violin teacher (as a violin duet) or with piano. The optional alternative piano accompaniments are by Heidi Rolfe.'I can still remember the thrill I felt as a child of 8 when my violin teacher introduced me to my first concertino. Learning playing and eventually mastering the famous Küchler Concertino in D major made me feel privileged and grown-up as if I were joining a very special club. That was a long time ago yet for me concertinos still hold a distinctive place in the teaching repertoire. Having now taught the violin for the last thirty years and seen how happily my pupils respond to learningduets - that distinctive sense of enjoyment at playing with an adult the improvement of intonation and tone production the liveliness of the lesson - I have composed three new concertinos inspired by the duet form.Taking three great keys for the violin - G D and A minor I have endeavoured to combine emotionally engaging and technically educational music in the 'Olden Style'. Uniquely I have written a second violin part for the teacher to play alongside their pupil's part and there is also a piano accompaniment for use alternatively in concert settings.I very much hope that these concertinos prove as popular and as helpful as the series of duets in my previously published books Sounds of a Rainbow and that they ignite that sense of wonderment and purpose I experienced while playing the Kuchler all those years ago.'Nigel Goldberg

As a passionate composer organist and ornithologist many of Olivier Messiaen's works incorporate these three elements. However he took a different stance for his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano composing it as a wedding present for his first wife Claire Delbos in 1932. The couple gave its first performance during the same year. Admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of eleven Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was an outstanding pupil winning many prizes. Thème et Variations was composed shortly after his appointment as titular organist at the Sainte Trinité church inParis and is often considered to be characteristic of his famous Quatour pour la fin du temps. Made up of a theme and five variations it begins simplistically before entering the complex variations. The theme is composed in common time and at a moderate tempo. Each variation varies in dynamics time signature tempo tonality and rhythm among other elements; however Messiaen cleverly retains suggestions of the theme all throughout. Challenging as it is Thème et Variations is an exciting varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists.

Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life - she died at 25 - and her music stands in the main line of French music exemplified by Faure somewhat tinged with the influence of Debussy's Impressionism. It is generally beautiful delicately coloured and touching. These challenging 'Two Pieces for Violin and Piano' exemplify these qualities. The Nocturne begins sparsely with bare octave figures wound about with a theme built from a repetitive rise-and-fall figure. As the texture become thickerthe violin becomes more virtuosic and begins to climb. There is no harmonic resolution until the final ppp note in the top register which is answered by an low octave from the piano. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

The subtitle refers to the child in all of us, regardless of age, who never wanted to grow up, but was forced to do so. With reference to the title of Peter Pan, the theme has to do with the shattered innocence of children who are subjected to abuse and decide to take refuge in themselves. Written around a lullaby, it refers to how to build an inner world to survive.

Sonata no.2 in d minor op.121 for Violin and Piano-Schumann?s second violin sonata was written in October/November 1851 only a few weeks after the first work for this combination of instruments (HN 428). The highly virtuosic sonata especially in the finale is characterised bythe close thematic dovetailing of the single movements. Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski who later became the composer?s biographer reported that ?smiling in his kind-hearted manner? the composer had said to him: ?I did not likethe first violin sonata; so I then wrote a second one which is hopefully better.? Schumann was apparently referring to the great differences in the expressive content: Whereas the first sonata with three movements seems rathermelancholy and dark overall the second ?Great Sonata? with four movements is bursting with energy and ends in vibrant D major.

Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 were the first works to be written by composer Ian Venables after he moved to Worcestershire in 1986. The pieces Pastorale Romance and Dance have been called some of the most beautiful pieces for Violin and Piano ever composed. Brimming with melodic invention and radiant lyricism the music of Three Pieces For Violin And Piano is both rich and varied. Pastorale begins the interplay between the Violin and the Piano with a beautifully relaxing melodic accord with an Elgarian influence firmly on its sleeve.Romance exhibits the best kind of artistic simplicity a musical love-letter featuring an achingly heartbreaking conversation between the two instruments often ambiguous in its outlook. Dance concludes the Three Pieces with a rhythmically upbeat melody laden with staccato that unfolds into a lovely harmonic concordance a fitting end to this series of dialogue between the Violin and Piano. Ian Venables' Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 is a beautifully composed work that is guaranteed to have audiences craving more of such a lovely interplay of these two instruments.
