John Stanley's 30 Voluntaries - published in three collections as op. 5, 6, and 7 - are amongst the best-known organ works of the 18th century. These compositions in free style were met with great acclaim by his contemporaries. The first volume, published in 1748, immediately achieved classic status and encouraged other composers to write similar collections. The op. 5 collection is now published in an up-to-date Urtext edition by Carus, based on the first printed edition and a 1785 edition consulted for comparison. The pieces, of easy to medium difficulty, are for manuals (and can alternatively also be played on the harpsichord), and mainly comprise two movements in the sequence slow - fast. Rhythmic energy, richness of color through the use of solo registers such as cornet and trumpet, dialog between the manuals with multiple echo effects - these are the characteristics of these wonderful compositions, which are also suitable for use in worship.

Solo keyboard adaptations of Handel's orchestral music were common during the 18th century, although few have matched the idiomatic command and interest achieved by the present text. The second instalment of the three volume collection of Zinck’s complete keyboard music contains the printed sonatas which followed his enormously successful 1783 set together with the first appearance in print of two sonatas from a manuscript source in the Royal Library, Copenhagen. The published sonatas show Zinck’s mastery of the styles of both C.P.E. Bach (his teacher) and Haydn, while the manuscript works are simpler in their technical demands, but include original fingering from the composer. All the sonatas in this volume would be effective on either clavichord or fortepiano.

Though primarily known as an opera composer, Giovanni Paisiello did not neglect the instrumental repertoire. His Capriccio in D minor, written in St Petersburg for his pupil the Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna and first published c.1799, is a fine example of this Southern Italian composer's keyboard style.
