Gunter Habicht composed music for folk instruments and contributions to educational literature as well as works for wind orchestra, chamber and orchestral music, including the Sinfonietta, published in 1964 by VEB Breitkopf & Hartel Musikverlag Leipzig, and the award-winning Quartettino 1969 for wind instruments, created for a composition contest organized by the Association of Composers and Musicologists on the occasion of the GDR's 20th anniversary. With an easy piano accompaniment, the sonatina for clarinet and piano Temperaments, written in the same year, is particularly aimed at more advanced music students and amateur musicians. Each of the three movements represents one temperament (1. sanguine type, 2. melancholic type, 3. choleric type) that needs to be worked out during the rehearsals. From 1935 to 1939, Gunter Habicht (1916-2010) studied with Herbert Viecenz and Boris Blacher (music theory and composition) and with Walther Meyer-Giesow and Ernst Hintze (conducting) at the Dresden Conservatory. In 1951, Gunter Habicht taught at an elementary school in Leipzig, and in 1952, he was appointed specialist lecturer for music at the Zentralhaus fur Volkskunst. From 1955 to 1981, he was a teacher of music theory and clarinet at the Leipzig City Music School.

Verdiana is a musical tribute to Giuseppe Verdi. It takes some of his most famous melodies and reimagines them in styles of Samba, Bossa Nova and Tango to produce a virtuosic showpiece for clarinet and orchestra. The work is structured in three movements. The titles of the movements do not only indicate from which operas the main melodies were taken, they also function as a hint to the styles in which the movements are written. The first movement, titled Il Sambatore, is a Samba based primarily on the melodic material from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The second one, Un Bossa in Maschera, is a slow Bossa Nova and consists of an aria from Un Ballo in Maschera. The third and the most virtuosic movement is called Don Tangoletto and derives most of its material from Don Carlos and Rigoletto. The piece exists in 4 versions: Solo clarinet with either full orchestra, string orchestra, string quartet or piano. Ever since the composer and pianist Peter Ludwig (*1951) heard Angel Villoldo's famous tango 'El Choclo' in the 1970s, this dance has fascinated him. And so he began to write tangos himself, bridging the gap between Latin American and European music cultures. Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugene Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opera-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. From 1906 on Béla Bartók was collecting folksongs on a regular basis. It was in 1907, during his first collecting trip to Transylvania, that he jotted down those three melodies in Gyergyóteker patak, Cs k, which he both provided with piano accompaniment (From Gyergyó) and arranged for solo piano (Three Hungarian Folksongs from Cs k) in the same year. The melodies were played by a ''sixty-year old man'' on a peasant flute. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respectthe strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

ââ¬ÅAndré Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo de Concours for Clarinet in 1899, as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections, the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part, where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra, with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas, operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d?Honneur.ââ¬Â.

Composed in 1956 by Bohuslav Martinu, the Sonatina for Bb Clarinet and Piano is a neo-classical piece. This work, to be played as a single movement has been written in three different sections: Moderato, Andante and Poco Allegro. The rhythms are reminiscent of a polka and a march and the piece contains unexpected syncopation. Being one of Bohuslav Martinu's later works, it was written in New York, after he spent some time in Paris. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a Czech composer and a violinist. Even though he was interested in different styles, including romanticism, jazz and expressionism, he wrote mainly neo-classical pieces, including 16 symphonies, 14 ballets and 15 operas.

Brahms, Reger and the consequences Adolph Busch had already emigrated to the United States when he wrote the A-Major Clarinet Sonata . Shortly thereafter he revised the work once again until it was completed in its final form in spring 1941. Busch, a brilliant and sought-after solo violinist of the 1920s and 30s, concertized regularly in England and had become friends there with the clarinetist Reginald Kells, to whom he also dedicated the piece in three movements. Demanding in its musical idiom and no doubt inspired by the expressive playing of his friend, the sonata evidences a strong proximity to the works of Brahms and Reger.
