Significantly remembered for his Organ works, Charles-Marie Widor 's (1844-1937) renowned Symphony 'Romane' is essential to the repertoire of all passionate organists. Widor became Director of Organ Studies at the Paris Conservatoire in 1890 and soon followed this by taking charge of the composition class. Nicknamed the 'Romane', the Symphony #10 reflects Widor 's mastery of the Organ, exploring all possibilities on the instrument, as well as deriving thematic material from plainchant. This work is one of the most important organ compositions of the end of the nineteenth Century. It was written in the years 1894/95 though the earliest fragments date back to 1890. These had their origins in improvised Magnificat versets played by Widor at the inauguration of the Cavaillé-Coll organ of St. Ouen in Rouen. This new edition of the Wiener Urtext edition is based upon the first edition (no manuscript scores have survived) and on further editions published during Widor’s lifetime.A recording made in 1932 of Widor’s own playing has been studied in conjunction with the printed source materials. The varied ending played on that recording isincluded as an alternative. It bears witness to the composer’s improvisational treatment of his own work and the spirit in which the whole composition was originally conceived.

The Toccata is the fifth movement of Charles-Marie's Symphony No. 5 Op. 42 and is a delightful piece for performance on organ.

The greatest French organist of his day Widor (1844 1937) composed 10 organ 'symphonies'—actually solo compositions usually consisting of 6 or 7 short movements that treat the organ as a kind of self-contained orchestra. French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. His Complete Study of the Fugue is an excellent introduction to the important technique. The book is in two parts, the secondgiving focus to elements such as the subject, the coda, modulations, the pedal, and structure, amongst other aspects. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes forpiano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Charles-Marie Widor founded the French form called Symphony for Organ; large-scale academically 'sonata form' works of great power often containing a toccata-like conclusion. Guilmant continued the development of such works although he called his eight works in the form sonatas. This is his work Quatrieme Sonate from Opus 61 for Organ Solo.

Elève de Louis Vierne, Alexandre Guilmant et Charles-Marie Widor, ami de Marcel Dupré, Emile Bourdon fut un musicien complet, dès son plus jeune âge. Composées entre 1926 et 1971 alors qu'il était organiste de la cathédrale de Monaco, ces Six Pièces proviennent de sources différentes et ont été réunies ici après un long travail collectif effectué par l'Association Emile Bourdon.
