The series 'Unterwegs mit der Querflöte' (Out and About With the Flute) is for children from the age of 5 learning to play the flute in one-to-one lessons or in pairs. The main aim has been to keep the book as concise as possible and to leave out any information which doesn't directly concern the pupil. The key features: - Simple explanations - easy for children from the age of 5 to follow - Four icons show what to do - without any fancy words - Playing duets and from memory right from the start - for holistic music-making - Ample additional material - numerous pieces, piano accompaniments and exercises together with the complete teacher's book and a parent's supplement are available online free of charge at: www.holzschuh-verlag.de/unterwegs Volume 2 - Rund um die Welt (Around the World): focuses mainly on the important topic of overblowing and on essential basics in music. Not only do pupils continue to practise playing from memory but they also progress now to the matter of transposing. The pieces become longer and more complex but the explanations still remain concise. The volume ends with pupils internalising the G-major scale and the addition of f-sharp^2 in a range going from d' - g^2.

Kathleen Demny has crafted a sure-to-please choral piece that boasts a compelling syncopated melody in the refrain with a convincing metrical change to express the words Maranatha, Lord Jesus, come to us. The equally energetic cantor's voices verses in the relative minor conclude with an SATB call: Veni, Emmanuel that leads us back to the refrain. Adding a strummed guitar with the keyboard part would nicely complement this delightful Advent song.

Here Psalm 63 is set as a choral piece with solo voice or schola taking the lead during the verses while the congregation can be invited to respond with support from the choir in the refrain. The simple steady accompaniment reflects well the longing and love expressed in words of the Psalm.

Today is a new collection of heartfelt songs for worship written and/or arranged for use throughout the church year. Based on the Scriptures, these beautiful songs are appropriate for seasonal use, weddings, funerals, Sundays, or feast days. Already a classic, “Heart of a Shepherd†incorporates a new refrain with the timeless Gelineau chant of the Twenty-Third Psalm. “Psalm 118: Today†is intended as a companion piece for Rory’s setting of Psalm 96 for Christmas. Both use the same motif for the word “today†(“hodie†or “today†in Psalm 96 and “haecdies†or “this day†in Psalm 118). The use of these settings helps to connect the feasts of Christmas and Easter. His stunning arrangement of Psalm 22 brilliantly depicts the intensity of Jesus’ words “Why have you abandoned me?†Each meaningful composition will evoke prayerful participation from your congregation and bring a theological depth to your worship experience.

The chant-like treatment of the Psalm verses, in addition to creating a simply lovely setting, can also be a great exercise in sensitively conveying the meaning of the words through proper textual stress—a skill that can be applied to less lyrical pieces in the choral repertoire. The voice parts are minimal in scope (each roughly an octave), but the fluctuating accidentals will require some attention for tuning.

From the gifted composer Daniel Burton comes a fresh treatment of these words. The gently pulsing pedal part in the organ seems to propel the text forward, imitative of Mary and Joseph walking on their journey. The anthem is easily learned in the midst of hectic Christmas preparations. Listen to the music and follow the score in this preview video.

This contemporary setting of the classic Latin eucharistic text finds a charming introduction and conclusion in brief quotes of Felix Mendelssohn’s familiar Songs without Words, op. 30, no. 3. Accessible phrasing and voice leading in the SAB choral parts seamlessly follow multiple modulations with adept support from the piano accompaniment, while the endearing recurrence of the opening melodic motive further unifies the piece.

Calming. Ethereal. Delicate. Peaceful. These are only a few words to describe this offering from Carlton Young. Not a difficult composition, but the choir needs to be confident maneuvering a few unexpected intervals in the chant-like melody against a sparse keyboard accompaniment. The brevity of the piece makes it quite useful when a call to worship or centering prayer is needed.

The notes on this piece state, “‘Lo, Judah’s Lion’ should take on the character of a wild victory dance.†Indeed, the hymn text (with roots in early-17th century Bohemia) takes on a whole new exuberance through the constant 3+3+2 rhythmic pattern. The words compare Jesus’ victory over death with the conquests of David and Samson, each verse ending with an Alleluia and an invitation to praise the Lord.
