Just about any ensemble can play James Rae's jazz arrangements of the very familiar tunes - Oh when the Saints; Swing low, Sweet Chariot; The Camptown Races. Solo parts are written out, but also include chord symbols for improvisers. The instrumental parts vary somewhat in difficulty, although not overly demanding for a music classroom or dedicated amateurs. The score includes five parts of variable instrumentation, along with piano and drums. Parts are available as download.

During his short life (1826--1864), Stephen C. Foster wrote over 200 songs, including some that are still extremely popular today. A few of his songs are so well known that many believe they are American folk songs. In this arrangement, three of his most popular songs are arranged for young band. The entire band shares the melody of Camptown Races, which is followed by a tender setting of My Old Kentucky Home featuring the woodwinds and bells. Everything comes to a rousing conclusion with Foster's first big hit, Oh! Susanna, that lets the entire band shine.

This highly programmatic work begins with an original waltz that sets a circus atmosphere. Soon after, the circus has packed up and the train begins to move to its next destination - but trouble looms in the distance and chaos ensues. Using two familiar melodies (Camptown Races and Over the Waves), this colorful work uses a myriad of clever effects as it juxtaposes circus music with impending disaster. Unbelievably creative!
