“Composed in 1978 by Henri Dutilleux, Timbres, Space, Movement is a work for Orchestra, also named ?The starry night? after a painting by Van Gogh. It was commisioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This great orchestral work lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is written for a full orchestra without Violins or Violas. A sketch of the placement of the instruments is given in the book as its disposition differs from a full orchestra: The Cellos placed in a half-circle in front of the conductor. The Cellos represents the space with twirling solos and more stagnant sections while the lack of Violins and Violas is for the quiet and motionless part of the painting. The solo of the Winds and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and the stars. It is divided in two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, amongst many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata, two symphonies, the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the Cello concerto 'Tout un monde lointain' (A whole distant word).â€.

An absolute classic for strings, this version is in C major to avoid forward extensions for viola and violoncello. There is nothing out of first position except for a simple shift for violoncello and bass in a brief passage. A solo string quartet section gives the work a truly Baroque feel.

First published and recorded in 1954 (only included at the time on the album "A Leroy Anderson Pops' Concert"), this lovely piano instrumental was released as a UK single in 1957 and hit the charts in early summer. Decca then issued the track on 45 in the U.S. which enjoyed a moderate success. Anderson later recorded stereo version of Forgotten Dreams in 1959. The composition features a haunting, romantic melody and its performance is within the reach of most late-intermediate pianists. Written in D major, it contains expressive tempo variations, an animated B section, and arpeggiated chords which require a bit of stretching. Instrumentation: Piano Solo: 2.2.2.2: Saxes(AAT, opt): 4.3.3.0: Bells: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).

In this one-movement concerto the flute is a highly adaptable soloist: at times a whispering breath on a starry sky, at others an arctic bird soaring above a winter landscape, taking startled flight on spotting a human figure. The idea for this work came to Nieminen in Rome when he was kept awake by persistent birdsong in the heat of the night. The title alludes to the last novel, Palomar, by Italo Calvino.

As the title implies, this music is "in the style of" Handel, using the counterpoint in a way that slowly builds intensity to the dramatic finish. Set in the key of E minor, this piece remains well within the reach of orchestras at the medium-easy level players.

The melancholic tone of the Ney (the Persian bamboo flute) is known for its alluring sound, emulating the human voice. In Persian literature, the Ney is considered a mystic instrument capable of expressing deep human emotions. In writing my flute concerto, I aimed not only to highlight the modern flautist's ability to play agile and brilliant passages but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo flute passages. Two prominent characters permeate the first movement of my concerto. They are marked in the score as lamentoso, and con spirito, expressing grief and loss, and joy of living respectively. The lament is mostly expressed in several extended cadenzas for solo flute while the con spirito consists of robust and energetic fast sections played by all forces of the orchestra. Apart from these two characters there are moments of mystery, comedy and the grotesque, among others. In the second movement, the lyrical and poetic character of the flute is prominently presented in dream-like passages surrounded by shimmering and tender orchestral colors. The solo flute is left out in an agitated middle section that references the first movement. In the third section of the movement the solo flute returns in meditative fashion culminating in a duet with the harp. The third movement is written as one continuous quasi scherzo, challenging the limits of agility and brilliance of the flute. Some of the materials from the earlier movements are presented again with joyous character. The coda elevates the concerto into its brightest and most festive character, driving to the end with relentless energy. The melancholic tone of the Ney (the Persian bamboo flute) is known for its alluring sound, emulating the human voice.  In Persian literature, the Ney is considered a mystic instrument capable of expressing deep human emotions. In writing my flute concerto, I aimed not only to highlight the modern flautist’s ability to play agile and brilliant passages but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo flute passages.

LES DJINNS was written at the request of pianist Caroline Montigny-Rémaury, though César Franck's (1822-1890) short work for piano and orchestra was instead premiered on March 15, 1885 by Louis Diémer with the Société Nationale de Musique. The piece is inspired by the poem of the same name in Victor Hugo's LES ORIENTALES, as Franck represents the idea of the mysterious and supernatural forces tearing the nocturnal sky through their passage. Franck was impressed with the virtuosic playing and interpretation of Diémer in this difficult work, which sparked a renewed interest in the piano for the composer. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.4: 4.2.3.1: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.

The bass and percussion sections lay down the classic bolero groove while the rest of the orchestra takes turns playing the lazy, singing, rolling melody. Enjoy a warm, tropical feeling as the orchestra meanders through the key of D major. First violins provide interesting flourishes with both separate and slurred bowings. Parts for bongos, guiro, conga, claves and maracas are included.

The concerto establishes a dialogue which alternates constantly between the guitar and the symphony orchestra, with the two sound worlds being maintained in perfect balance while also exploring the unique possibilities presented by each: the guitar develops a surprising array of resources which enhance its expressive capacity to the utmost, while the orchestra envelops it in an extensive range of textures which at times give rise to subtle tones, and at others, all the tonal vigour of the tutti. The language I employ is intended as a means of achieving an efficient symbiosis between modernity and tradition, continuing in the line of my previous works as a composer. It contains no references to popular music and at all times veers away from the expectations created by the language of folklore exploited in concertos of this kind by the majority of recognised composers. In Concerto de Rialp, modernity is reflected through a search for unique expressive forms, experimentation with new means of thematic development and a unique presentation of formal solutions, all the while, however, respecting expressiveness and lyricism as the foundations of communicating with the audience. The concerto also explores the guitar's new technical resources. Thanks to specific work on left hand extensions, mechanical formulas have been developed which allow certain scales to be played at unprecedented speeds. In the cadenza of the first movement, the guitar develops the main theme in the form of an instrumental motif that has never been used before in guitar scores, producing a polyphonic effect of new dimensions.I have worked to exploit the distinctive sound differences existing between the guitar and the orchestra -both from the dynamic and the tonal points of view- in order to really develop the dramatic effect that their being brought together affords. In the second movement -calmo assai- this dramatic quality is expressed in a way that is particularly powerful by means of a tension never before achieved in a concerto for guitar and orchestra.

This emotional and reflective work paints a stunning picture of the holiday season as seen through the eyes of a homeless person on a street corner. The music relies heavily on a juxtaposition of the Ukrainian Bell Carol and Greensleeves, painting a picture of a lonely person who is eventually joined by others. Ultimately, a quartet performs in dramatic fashion before switching to a final duet, leaving the homeless person with a granted wish - company. A stunning and unique work that brings incredible awareness to the holidays and the true spirit of giving.

This exciting work does wonders with the full spectrum of sounds available to string orchestra; spiccato, col legno (witht the stick), harmonics, tremolo, and more. These effects serve the musical idea, which is an exciting minor mode theme reminiscent of a movie soundtrack. This is one piece your orchestra will ask to play again and again!
