Béla Bartók's (1881-1945) Four Orchestra Pieces, Op. 12 premiered in January 1922 in Budapest, but did not become one of Bartók's best-known works until its popularity was revived by Pierre Boulez in the 1970s. Bartók's influences are on display in these pieces, including that of Debussy in the first movement Preludio, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the Scherzo. Four Orchestra Pieces is considered a bridge stylistically between Bartók's early works like Duke Bluebeard's Castle and his mature works like The Miraculous Mandarin. Part of the British folk revival of the early 20th century, Gustav Holst's (1874-1934) Somerset Rhapsody consists of his interpretations of three English folk tunes from the Somerset region: The Sheep-Shearing Song, High Germany, and True Love's Farewell. Holst dedicated this piece, his first major critical success, to Cecil Sharp, a chronicler of English folk music who collected the songs that Holst adapted. Holst intended the cycle to tell a story of a young couple whose relationship is interrupted by war. Somerset Rhapsody premiered in London in April 1910. Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) originally dedicated his CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN in D, Op. 35, to Leopold Auer. The Hungarian violinist concluded that it was too difficult. The concerto finally premiered on December 4, 1881, Adolph Brodsky performing the solo part with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Hans Richter. Influential 18th century music critic Eduard Hanslick's complaint about the length of the concerto gradually succumbed to its growing reputation as a challenging yet irresistibly melodic touchstone for aspiring violinists all over the world. Belgium singer, actor, and composer Jacques Brel (1929-1978) wrote the music and lyrics for Ne me quitte pas (If You Go Away) in 1959. The song was later adapted with English lyrics by Rod McKuen, and the work is considered a pop standard with recordings by many artists. This orchestration was completed by Richard Hayman (1920-2014), who had a very successful career as chief music arranger for the Boston Pops Orchestra, an association that lasted over 50 years, and who also served as a pops conductor for various orchestras including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, and the Grand Rapids Symphony. In 1840, the King of Prussia invited Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) to accept a lofty musical appointment in the French Academie Royale. A few years later, Wilhelm IV commissioned the composer to write incidental music to a religious drama by Jean Racine, ATHALIE, based on the queen of Judah during Jehoram's reign. It was intended for a private performance on December 1, 1845 and saw its first public performance on January 8th of the following year. WAR MARCH OF THE PRIESTS, a brief excerpt taken from the work, is sometimes heard during graduation ceremonies. Reprint edition. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.3.1: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).

This edition of EL AMOR BRUJO (LOVE, THE SORCERER) is the 1924 revision of the 1915 version by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla (1876 - 1946). Originally a collaboration between de Falla, the flamenco dancer Pastora Imperio, and librettist María Martínez Sierra, the ballet follows Candela, a recent widow who attempts to dispel her abusive late husband's ghost so she can remarry. The original version of the ballet was not well-received, so de Falla dialed back the Roma cultural elements prominent in the original version and expanded the size of the orchestra to appeal to contemporary audiences. The 1924 version premiered in Paris on May 1925. Reprint Edition. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).1(dEH).2.1: 2.2.0.0: Timp.Perc(1): Pno: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Contralto Voice.

Franz Liszt (1811-1886) started work on his CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA No. 2 in A major, S. 125, in 1839 and 1840. Putting it through a series of revisions, he dedicated the concerto to his student Hans von Bronsart von Schellendorf. The composer conducted the first performance in Weimar on January 7, 1857 with Bronsart as soloist. Liszt completed a 4th revision in 1861. Less virtuosic than his first piano concerto, it is played without break and serves as a masterful example of thematic transformation. JOHANN STRAUSS II (1825-1899) initially wrote FRÜHLINGSSTIMMEN, Op. 410 (VOICES OF SPRING) as a concert aria. He dedicated the piece, with a libretto by Richard Genée, to pianist-composer Alfred Grünfeld. When Bertha Schwarz (stage name, Bianca Bianchi) sang the first performance at the Theater an der Wien on March 1, 1883, the audience loved it so much that they demanded an encore. The composer wasted no time in arranging a purely orchestral version, which the Strauss Orchestra premiered only seventeen days later. The waltz achieved great success during his Russian tour in 1886. This edition for reduced orchestra was arranged by Adolphe Dumont. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, in 1878. He composed the work for his longtime friend, famed violinist Joseph Joachim, who premiered it in Leipzig with the Gewandhaussaal on January 1, 1879, Brahms himself conducting. The program also included, at Joachim's insistence, Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, on which Brahms modeled his own concerto. While the critical reception of the time was mixed, the audiences at the various early performances received the work well. Most complaints directed at the concerto addressed the role of the solo violin, noting that the soloist does not offer much of the melodic material or include much in the way virtuosic passages, a consequence of looking more towards Beethoven's serious aesthetic rather than Paganini's flashy one. Joachim himself, before a falling out with the composer over personal reasons, included Brahms' concerto among the best German offered, saying: The Germans have four violin concertos. The greatest, most uncompromising is Beethoven's. The one by Brahms vies with it in seriousness. The richest, the most seductive, was written by Max Bruch. But the most inward, the heart's jewel, is Mendelssohn's. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin in set.

Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Édouard Lalo (1823-1892) wrote Concerto for Cello in D minor a few years after the popular Symphonie espagnole in 1876 for Belgian cellist Adolphe Fischer. The following year, Fischer was the soloist for the premiere at the Cirque d'Hiver on December 9, 1877. Influenced by his Symphonie espagnole, this concerto evokes a Spanish atmosphere. At the time of its premiere, there were few serious cello concerti, leading Lalo's Concerto to serve as a catalyst for the cello to be considered a more soloistic instrument. Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) wrote the KAISER-WALZER, Op. 437 (EMPEROR WALTZES) to celebrate the toast of friendship that Franz Joseph I extended when he visited Wilhelm II in 1889. Fritz Simrock, his publisher, diplomatically suggested the name of the waltz so that it could be attributed to either emperor, depending on the circumstances of each performance. Originally titled HAND IN HAND, its first performance took place on October 21 of that year in Berlin. At the precocious age of fourteen, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) scribbled out his Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in E major. He wrote a second, this time longer, double piano concerto the following year. In December 1823, the young composer gave the first performance of the E major concerto with his sister Fanny Mendelssohn. Since he came to regard it as mere juvenilia, it never achieved publication in his lifetime. Filled with stylish finger-work, the concerto clearly served to display the musical gifts of the two siblings. It remained forgotten until a version, which had been revised by the composer himself and edited by Karl-Heinz Köhler, surfaced in 1961 in a Leipzig critical edition. Instrumentation: 1.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo pianos (2 - available separately).

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) wrote his CELLO CONCERTO in A minor, Op. 129, in 1850, within the span of only two weeks. He tried offering the work to two publishers before Breitkopf and Hartel decided to publish it. He stressed the point that it would probably sell because cello concerti were few and far between. Never performed in the composer's lifetime, it received its premiere in Oldenburg on April 23, 1860, with Ludwig Ebert playing the solo part. The unique charm of the concerto lies in its structure and scoring, without movement breaks, and written so that the cello part almost never strays from its middle and upper registers. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote Capriccio Brillant, Op. 22 during his second vist to England. This charming example of Mendelssohn's writing for piano has two movements: an Andante with a gentle, reflective melody and an Allegro con fuoco that shatters the previous languid mood with a cascade of arpeggios that leads into a march-like principal theme. The solo piano part never lapses into dazzling technique for its own sake. It premiered in London by the Philharmonic Society on May 25th, 1832. It is widely believed that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote the Adagio in E major, K. 261 in or around 1776 as a replacement for the second movement of his Violin Concerto No. 5 in A, K. 219. The likely reason for the replacement is a complaint by Italian violinist Antonio Brunetti, recently brought to the Salzburg court orchestra by the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, Heironymus Colloredo, that the original movements was too artificial, according to a letter from Leopold Mozart. The Mozarts, finding Brunetti boorish and morally objectionable, also would have thought his complaint regarding the artificial second movement to confirm their worst opinions of Italian taste. Still, young Mozart wrote the replacement Adagio as requested, and its serene beauty in sonata form remains a fine example of his lyrical ability. WERTHER, an opera in four acts by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), found its inspiration in a novel by Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther, which in turn based its story on the actual suicide of a young man haunted with adoration for a married woman. First performed on February 16, 1892 in Vienna, it quickly reached the stage of the Theatre Lyrique in Paris but faltered due to its serious subject matter. The growing success of Massenet's opera Manon allowed it to be introduced to Germany. From there, it achieved fame in opera houses across the world. In the third act, Werther sings Pourquoi me réveiller? (Why do you awaken me, oh breath of spring?), contrasting his blissful realization that Charlotte has accepted his love with the impending realization that their happiness cannot last. The six CONCERTI ARMONICI was long thought to be the work of the violinist-impresario Carlo Ricciotti or composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, but more recent research has revealed the composer to be Unico Wilhelm van Wassenauer (1692-1766). Born into a wealthy Dutch family, the diplomat and composer founded a Collegium musicum in The Hague under the oversight of Ricciotti. Composed between 1725 and 1740, the six concertos have been falsely attributed to a variety of contemporaries, Ricciotti and Pergolesi amongst them, since its anonymous publication. Wassenauer's aristocratic background was the reason for his secretiveness. The sentiment of the time ordained that musicians belong to the lower classes. This edition of CONCERTINO No. 2 (also CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, CONCERTO IV, or just CONCERTINO in G), drawing from the CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, IUW 3, was edited by 20th century Baroque expert Fritz Rikko. Rikko spuriously attributes the work to Pergolesi. Despite Wassenauer's authorship having since been confirmed, Rikko's original editorial notes have been retained. Instrumentation: Str (4 Vn parts [2.2.2.2].3.2.2): Harpsichord Continuo in score.

The Voice on the Mountain was written for Mike Veak, a band director who dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching instrumental music in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nolan Schmit begins the piece with a flute solo representing a solitary voice on a mountain. The voice begins to build in strength and intensity as it travels down the mountain, is heard by others and is communicated to distant lands. This is a musical metaphor for a teacher - a solitary voice - who impacts generations of students. This is really a tribute to all band directors. A dramatic setting with an explosive ending.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his Violin Concerto in E minor over a six-year period from 1838 to 1844 for his childhood friend, the violinist Ferdinand David, who contributed the cadenza in the version of the concerto most performed today. The concerto premiered on March 13, 1845 in Leipzig, but Mendelssohn himself was unable to conduct due to illness. Unlike most concerti of the time, Mendelssohn has the violin enter immediately without any orchestral introduction, and its cadenza is unusually placed after the development of the first movement instead of at the end of the movement. The concerto remains one of the most ubiquitous pieces in the violin repertoire. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Vn in set.
