This is a collection of 25 original songs themed on the elements: Earth Sea and Sky. The original idea was conceived for a cluster of primary schools in Devon who were embarking on a 'Planet Earth' whole school project. As a result the Sea songs are aimed at Years 1 and 2 Years 3 and 4 tackle the Earth songs and Years 5 and 6 have the Sky songs. Although conceived as a whole school project Earth Sea and Sky works equally as well as a song book to dip in and out of.The songs are written with a sensitivity for the range and skills of the age group they are designed for and any part writing is optional allowing even lessconfident choirs to get involved and get singing. This is a wonderful follow on from Junior songscape building on Lin Marsh's well established and much loved classroom singing resouces.

Songs Dances and Ellipses was commissioned by the Barbican Centre for the Chilingirian String Quartet on the occasion of their 25th anniversary.Quoting Saxton: 'The title Songs Dances and Ellipses refers both to the characterand the architecture of my quartet. The fundamental nature of the relationship between the extra-human music of the spheres and human musical expression manifest in song and dance lies behind much of my music; in the case ofSongs Dances and Ellipses I was absorbed by the idea of the most humanly intimate medium - the string quartet - set in the context of the all-embracing and very real elliptical orbits of the planets. The music consists of fivelinked movements which form three larger sections. Movements one and two form the first part the central slow movement is the second part and movements four and five form the third and final section.

This piece features two folksongs from Israel each portraying a different mood. The first section.'Ma Averech'(How shall this child be blessed) is calm and nostalgic with a slight hint of melancholy. In the second section 'Zemer Atik' (Old Song) the celebration breaks out! An exciting varied composition that your band will love playing!

Flexible Woodwind Ensembl-This suite of folk songs is scored for woodwind quartet and a single unpitched drum. Although the nominal scoring is for flute two clarinets and bassoon the piece has considerable inbuilt flexibility of scoring. The options for instruments on each part are as follows: Part 1: Flute oboe or soprano saxophone Part 2: Bb Clarinet or alto saxophone Part 3: Bb clarinet alto saxophone or tenor saxophone Part 4: Bassoon bass clarinet or baritone saxophoneThe piece may be played by any combination of these instruments. Where necessary some passages have been transposed down an octave in the soprano alto and tenor saxophone parts.Where this occurs the lower pitch is also included in the score. There are also a few notes in the bass clarinet part of the March which have been taken up the octave through necessity; similarly this is indicated in the score.The drum should be unsnared and of medium low pitch. A bodhran tenor drum low tom-tom or floor tom are suggested although in the end it is up to the performer!The folk songs used in the piece are not particularly well known these days. 'Gan to the Kye' is an example of the rich culture of traditional music from Northumbria. The title means 'Go to the cows' and is a love song in which the herdsman asks his lover (in a gesture possibly lacking somewhat in romance) to accompany him whilst he tends his herd of cattle.The second movement is a setting of 'Rosemary Lane' a beautiful Somerset song. It tells of a serving girl ill-used by a sailor; as so often in traditional music the beauty of the tune is quite at odds with the unpleasant circumstances related.'Gently Johnny' is a good-humoured song in which the enthusiastic suitor is teased by the object of his affections: he is asked to cool his ardour whilst at the same time being left in no doubt that his attentions may be as bold as he wishes! The middle section uses another song this time from Middlesex called 'Jack Williams'.

Farewell Song has been taken from Der Trompetervon Säckingen by Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884 thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today only the farewell song called JungWerner?s Abschied also known as Behüt? dich Gott has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. He felt itwas appropriate to entrustthe melody of this song originally written for tenorvoice to the baritone or euphonium.

Score-Paul Creston's Liberty Song '76 for Band.Liberty Song '76 is based on three principle songs of the Revolutionary period: 'The Liberty Song ' the first American patriotic ballad written by John Dickinson to the tune of 'Hearts of Oak'by William Boyce; 'Enraptured I gaze' by Francis Hopkinson the earliest American composer of secular music and a signer of the Declaration of Independance; and theubiquitous 'Yankee Doodle ' the only true tune which Ulysses S. Grant could identify ('I only know two tunes' Grant said 'one is Yankee Doodle and the other isn't').The eleven-measure introduction presents the threethemes in fragmentary suggestion and affirms the emotional basis of the piece. Each tune is first presented in its original form and then harmonised and developed in 1976 style. 'Yankee Doodle' is in the unorthodox fugal style and the concluding measures of the fugue combines all three tunes is a quasi-stretto.Liberty Song '76 was commissioned by Ithaca College for the Walter Beeler Series memorialising his many contributions tothe Band World. The first performance of the work was by the Ithaca College Band conducted by the composer on February 9 1976.

Three delightful “village” songs from the Spanish Renaissance have been combined into this instrumental suite for younger string ensembles. The short movements have stylistic shifts between major and minor modes andare written with melodic moving parts for all instruments. The optional medieval percussion adds to the Renaissance flavor.
