The volume at hand was edited by Klára Móricz. By publishing Concerto for Orchestra the score for one of Bartók’s truly importantorchestra works is now available. The well readable introduction describes the genesis of this work that Bartók wrote during the last part of his life under special circumstances. Programme note “TRIBUTES – album for strings” (1994-95) includes three hommages which might also be performed separately.The shared point of departure was the hommage to three major composers of the 20th century – Bartok Lutoslawski and Sibelius.In FOUR OBSERVATIONS the hommage is to Bartok (on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death 1995). Hungarian Radio asked me to write a piece in his honor but apart from the very last unison string figure which is - I think - very Bartokian the work in no way intends to evoke even less to imitate the musical style of the great Hungarian master. This would be an act of impudence against a composer who was such an exceptionally integrated personality and who has himself shown (in 'Mikrokosmos') the worthy way to pay a personal tribute to highly respected colleagues: In 'Hommage á J.S.B.' and 'Hommage à R. Sch.' Bela Bartok composes in his own manner but lets the music reflect some qualities of the said composers as perceived in Bartok's mind. In a similar way my 'Observations from an infinite Rapport' reflects as well the timeless proportions of the 'golden section' - which seem to have inspired Bartok so much - in his great respect for perceptive structural patterns. 'OUT OF THIS WORLD' was composed at the request of a group of Lutoslawski's friends as a symbol of parting to a great composer and a noble man. The title quotes a poem by Yunus Emre the Turkish 14th century poet. The opening line of the poem 'Biz dünyadan' reads as follows in English translation: 'We are on the way out of this world we

Bartok’s Violin Concerto No.2 is an exciting work which is available here as a miniature score for study and reference purposes.Bela Bartok's interest in variation as a compositional method was most fully realised in this Concerto which he completed in 1938 and dedicated to his dear friend Zoltan Szekely. This is a detailed yet unostentatious Concerto in which the variations and intense expression the piece to life.

The second of the Quartets commissioned by the Naxos label was completed in January 2003. This work swings between nervous virtuosic energy to the serene calm of an extended Lento with exotic harmonies reminiscent of Bartok andis characterised by it's sharp and unpredictable contrasts. First performed by the Maggini Quartet on 11 July 2003 at the Pittville Pump Room Cheltenham as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. This is the score ina pocket-size format. Par PENARD OLIVIER. Composé d'une brève ouverture et de trois mouvements, le quatuor Artefact propose un parcours musical évolutif en utilisant un langage tout d'abord âpre et dissonant conduisant progressivement vers une stabilisation rythmique et harmonique où l'évocation du jazz est probante. La forme de chacun des mouvements corrobore cette intention. Après une violente ouverture où la matière musicale se désagrège dans la plus grande instabilité rythmique, le second mouvement, pièce maîtresse du quatuor, est un scherzo épousant la forme du rondeau dans lequel se développe un tissu contrapuntique sur les intervalles de seconde et de septième. L'énergie rythmique est au centre du discours et oscille constamment entre une dynamique ternaire et binaire. La virtuosité instrumentale y est prépondérante. Les intentions mélodiques sont rares, mais des mélismes en constante transformation assurent la cohésion formelle. Construit lui-même de manière palindromique, comme un écho miniature à la forme rondeau (ABA'CAB'A''), le trio central transpose certains éléments motiviques du scherzo dans une atmosphère harmonique plus diatonique qui prélude au dernier mouvement. L'interlude est une passerelle entre le scherzo et le final, un moment de méditation transitoire qui nous plonge dans un monde d'angoisse et de poésie où l'évocation des musiques nocturnes de Belà Bartok ressurgit comme un hommage. La construction formelle est également de type ternaire. Les tensions chromatiques des mouvements précédents sont ici exacerbées par l'utilisation des instruments dans leurs tessitures les plus élevées. Cependant, le mouvement de libre passacaille qui débute et achève la pièce se déploie dans un langage harmonique où le diatonisme de plus en plus présent propose un apaisement de l'écoute qui préfigure le quatrième mouvement. Enfin, la Rapsodie-jazz se présente comme un final libéré de la dissonance et des cadres formels utilisés précédemment. Le rythme est ici tout autant structurant que dans le scherzo, l'emploi des intervalles de seconde est toujours aussi présent, mais la pièce se déroule dans la plus grande régularité métrique, animant le discours d'une exaltation jubilatoire que l'évocation du jazz vient renforcer. C'est dans cette proposition de synthèse du langage savant avec le jazz que le parcours dramaturgique du quatuor prend sa pleine justification. Loin du pastiche et de la citation, la réunion de ces deux mondes musicaux parfois dissociés fonde un langage uniforme donné comme une alternative personnelle à la musique d'aujourd'hui. Contrairement à l'héritage bartokien des 'Contrastes', la formation de ce trio pour violon, clarinette et piano, a généré le projet d'explorer la similitude des modes de jeu du violon et de la clarinette et d'élaborer ainsi une texture renforcée par le jeu dans les cordes du piano. Sparkle signifie en anglais 'scintillement', 'éclat' : alternent donc ici dans l'écriture le continu et le discontinu, la mouvance homogène et la rupture acérée des lignes mélodiques.
