Carl Orff devoted much of his life to the development of a philosophy of Music for Children, based on his belief that music is the natural outcome of speech, rhythm and movement. His ideas and pioneering work have had a major influence on music and dance education throughout the world and today that work continues under the guidance of leading teachers and educators in many countries. The five basic German volumes of 'Music for Children' by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman were published between 1950 and 1954. Edition have since been published in Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Ghana, Great Britain (including a special Welsh edition), Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin-America, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the USA. In 1952 the first edition in translation appeared, an English language adaptation by Doreen Hall and Arnold Walter for their Canadian and American students. A few years later, Margaret Murray independently developed a version (1957-1966), essentially to fulfil the needs of United Kingdom teachers. Inevitably the considerable growth of Orff-Schulwerk in the United States led to the publication of the American Edition (1977) to satisfy the requirements of a different educational system and national heritage. Orff-Schulwerk: Music for Children has proved itself to be a stimulating source of material for music teaching. Carl Orff's fundamental educational ideas have revitalized music education in nursery schools, at all levels of primary and secondary education and in special music schools, based on the concepts that: - music, dance and language are inter-related and animated through rhythm. - when children discover, invent, improvise and compose, their experience of music is intensified. These creative activities are complementary to those of interpreting and listening to music. - all who take part are encouraged to contribute, not only vocally but also instrumentally. - the Orff approach to music education is many sided; it is concerned with practical music-making, it provides fundamental experiences and it lays the foundation for a comprehensive musical training. - movement games and activities for body awareness in space, time and flow, lead to movement improvisation and dance forms. - music and dance have been notated in many different ways in history. Various ways of writing down sounds and music, as well as playing from and interpreting different kinds of sources are being explored. Today, countless teachers and institutions are using these ideas. More and more teachers look for ways of invovling their students in active music making. In particular, they seek to challenge their pupils' creativity by the use of music, dance and speech - as media of human expression - as a foundation of all education. A prerequisite for work in Orff-Schulwerk is the artistic and pedagogical training of teachers. The Orff Institute was founded in 1961 as a Department of the 'Mozarteum', in Salzburg, Austria. Training offered includes a four-year diploma course, a two-year post-graduate course, and a one-year-course in English. At the opening of the Orff Institute in Salzburg in 1963, Carl Orff ended his speech with a quotation from Schiller: 'I have done my part, now do yours.' That challenge has been taken up by teachers worldwide. S'vivon (se-vi-vohn) is the Hebrew word for dreidl, a four-sided top that is popular with children during the celebration of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. In this arrangement by Brendan McBrien, variations are created through the subtle use of motivic rhythms from within the melody, presenting the theme in different voices and keys in both arco and pizzicato, using the A section of the tune as an accompaniment for the B section, and, finally, changing the modality to major, which creates (for a short time) a very different feeling from the traditional minor setting. Debussy’s six movement work for piano has been cherished the world over for its whimsical charm and the way in which they are evocative of childhood. Abrahamsen expands on these traits in his orchestration of the six little masterpieces; be it the mystical heaviness of Jimbo’s Lullaby the icy pirouettes in The Snow is Dancing or the buoyant ending: Golliwogg’s Cakewalk

Here, the band will be able to work with latin rhythms, syncopation (which doesn't rush) and with possible solo elements on the melody. Use your imagination and feel free to re-arrange to let your musicians shine. (Example: bar 27 and onwards can be performed as a duet) All three songs can be played separately. They have different degrees of difficulty and if the band lack the ability to perform the last melody, you can easily stop before that. 1. 'We don't talk about Bruno' (1-55) benefits greatly from having a Guiro saying 'go-ap tsh tsh'. This piece can be stopped by playing to the end of bar 54. If you want to play this piece only, you can easily extend it, by repeating from 27, perhaps with other soloists? 2. 'Surface Pressure' (55-116) If the cowbell-part is not played, percussionists have to play these two weak beats in 56. The groove for drum set is also very important from 68. Also, that you get a proper swing feeling on 84- 98 and that the drummer in 99 really goes back to even eighths. If you want to extend this piece, you may repeat from 84. If you want to end after this song, you can insert a ritardando 2 bars before 116 and preferably add a quarter note high G, then a quarter rest, and then a darker G. Another possibility is to repeat from 84 and then stop at the first note in 100. 3. 'The Family Madrigal' can of course also be played alone. This is truly a song that gets people clapping! I have chosen to make the opening rhythm a little easier by adding an eighth note to the one (120) If the ensemble has a very good understanding of rhythm, it can be skipped, but then the only tone in the phrase that is on the pulse beats will be the quarter note in the second measure. You can start the piece straight on bar 120 without the drum intro. If you want to extend this piece, you can repeat 152 – 199. (Or you can go all the way back to 136) If you do so, you can perhaps skip the first house at the end, if the audience is not standing on the chairs dancing Have fun performing this arrangement! Preludio and Andante in Swing for Flugel Horn or Trumpet and Concert Band-Raffaello Sanzio better known simply as Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His paintings have been admired and imitated for centuries and his architectural works have had a considerable influence. He is seen as one of the finest painters in the history of Western art as well the supreme master of preliminary drawings for his numerous projects. Raphael’s works have always been appreciated and studied and are regarded as jewels of academic art.This composition is inspired by the great painter and his dazzling works but also the composer’s own brother Rafael or Rafa to who this piece is dedicated. With its entertaining Andante inSwing and peaceful Preludio we have a rich picture of a generous understanding and loving person wholly dedicated to music teaching particularly to younger children. Thanks to his many qualities the young pupils enrich their musical faculties and broaden their knowledge.Like a well chosen metaphor Raphael is dedicated to Rafa whose great achievement is in stimulating and educating the young - and not so young - through his remarkable work at the Allegro Centro Musical (Valencia Spain) with the aim of providing them with a solid musical training in order to become good musicians and well-adjusted people.

Soliloquy for a Passing Century - Score-'All music be it 'abstract' or 'descriptive ' or 'popular' or 'serious ' must speak for itself. Words about it are irrelevant unless they be lyrics or narration. That being said I will attempt a few words about my piece because I was asked to do so and the very special nature of the event in which this first performance takes place. Therefore I offer a guide to the musical gestures and terrain that make up the work and hopefully helpcommunicate my music to the listener.'Remembrance Day' opens softly with a prologue evoking a distant nostalgic Lullaby. As it fades a sudden loud chime combines with high Clarinets in an anguishedsequence that cries out a musical pattern establishing and shaping the body of the work. The music alternates between elegiac thematic references and the pulsations and accents of chimes and tolling bells. A slight pause-thensubdued but menacing sounds from muted Trombones Tuba and Percussion. Over this is a variant of the Clarinets initial 'cry of anguish'- but this time in quiet grief-turning into a funeral cortege. The cortege proceeds to chantsand responses that grow in intensity changing to hymn-like swelling and embellishments. A sudden explosive interruption brutal and violent-the previous menacing muted trombone motif now unleashed. This leads to a full-blown andaffirmative chorale. Following this climax the work winds down diminishing in intensity. There are passing references to what was heard before. Now comes a last variation on the chant and a pianissimo echo variant in mutedTrumpets and then Woodwinds of the hymns and chorales. As this recedes comes the plaintive cry of anguish again-unresolved. Once again quiet pulsations a short silence-and the epilogue-a few fragments of the opening lullaby-somefinal pulsings-a few timpani beats-silence.I am honored to have been asked to write this work and I thank the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation for making this possible. Par ZIEGELBACK ANDREAS. Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales… don’t they? Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbäck’s interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916 from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being 'uncivilised'. Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance '. . . The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence createdby the blaring brass on account of his sick wife and three children . . .'.

Cantata for Mezzosoprano and Orchestra. Par THEODORAKIS MIKIS. Sung texts are in Greek; English, German and French translations are included. A good friend of mine, the poet lacovos Kambanellis, was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War II. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of 'Mauthausen'. In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and gave me the opportunity to set them to music. I did this with much pleasure, firstly, because I liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly, because I myself was detained in Italian and German prisons during the Nazi occupation, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, of events that must never be forgotten. First and foremost, of course, the Mauthausen Cantata is addressed to all those who suffered under Fascism and fought against it. We must keep the Nazi crimes continually in our minds, because that is the only guarantee and the only way to assure that they are not repeated. And we can see every day that the ghost of Fascism is far from being laid. It seldom shows its real face, but Fascist cultures and mentalities exist all over the world. Caroline Mathilde Act I (Concert Suite)-The story centres on the English princess Caroline Mathilde (1751-1775) sister of George III who at the age of 15 was sent to Denmark to marry the 17-year-old eccentric and schizophrenic Danish King Christian VII. The balletportrays her unhappy marriage the King's growing madness and her fatal love-affair with Struensee the King's influential physician which leads to their arrest his execution and her exile at the age of 20 separated from hertwo young children. In keeping with the period and perhaps also with the traditions of Romantic ballet the music is relatively simple in harmony and form and most of the action is conveyed in set-piece dances. The suite which consists essentially of the second half of Act I begins with one of these a bristling interplay of wind and string ensembles in D major portraying in the ballet a curious nuptial game with the king and princess on movablepedestals. The slow music that follows has to do with the king's healing by Dr. Struensee and the new queen's unquiet reverie (oboe and cor anglais solos). Then the suite like the act is capped by a pair of pas-de-deux thefirst savage and bizarre for the royal couple the second rich and passionate for the queen and the miracle-working doctor.Score (miniature).
