Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909), the renowned pianist and composer, was one of the most significant Spanish masters of the second half of the 19th century. Following studies in Paris and Brussels he went on a world tour and earned great success as a pianist. From 1880 onwards he belonged to Ferenc Liszt's circle and improved his piano technique as a pupil of the Hungarian master. Besides his operas, orchestral works and songs he also composed a considerable number of piano works. One of his most popular cycles for the piano is the Op. 47 Suite espagnola (1886), the movements of which he named after Spanish towns and provinces. The composition is thus an enthusiastic tribute to hishomeland: a fascinating embodiment of Spanish folk music elaborated with Lisztian virtuosity. $10.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

Description Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona at the age of four, and it is as a prolific composer of solo works for the pianoforte that we must celebrate him most. This Dover edition presents two of Albeniz' best known works in authoritative editions: the piano suite Iberia, generally considered to be his masterpiece; and the album leaves Espana, which contain the 'Tango', his most popular individual work. Iberia is a collection of twelve musical scenes of Spanish life, principally Andalusian, written between 1906 and 1909. Its brilliant and complex character is suffused with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish popular music, to which Albeniz turned for inspiration in the last years of his life. Espana, an earlier work first published in 1890, is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century-salon, and, like Iberia, the harmony and style of Impressionism, which Albeniz undeniably helped to establish. Songlist Almeria Capricho Catalan El Albaicin El Corpus En Sevilla / Corpus Christi In Seville El Polo El Puerto / The Port Eritana Evocacion / Evocation Jerez Lavapies Malaga Malaguena Preludio / Prelude Rondena Serenata Tango Triana Zortzico

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. He left two pieces unfinished at the time of his death: Azulejos was completed by Enrique Granados while Navarra was finished by Albéniz?s pupil the French composer Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921) and published in 1912. It was originally intended to form part of the Iberia Suite but the composer gave up on it after declaring it to be 'shamelessly cheap'. Nevertheless this work for solo Piano remains a worthwhile addition to therepertoire.
