Béla Bartók's '44 Duos” for violins are a set of marvelous musical miniatures that draw on the composer's love of Eastern European folk music. Ranging from easy to advanced standard, they have long been the province only of string players with arrangements first for cellos and more latterly for violas. Now they are available to delight flautists and will be ideal for recitals, either as a main program item or as encores, just as violinists have enjoyed them since their composition. To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Three Evocations for 2 Flutes is an exquisite addition to the repertoire. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Bozza's Three Evocations are exciting duets containing much musical variation andcontrast suitable for advanced flautists. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'
