Two fantastic pieces; J.S. Bach's Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring and Vivaldi's Allegro from Double Trumpet Concerto. In both of these Baroque Gems it is essential that an appropriate tempo is set immediately and maintained without effort. The arranger suggests metronome values around 84 for the Bach piece and 116 for the Vivaldi.In the Bach always have awareness of where the melody lies and give careful consideration to whether the dotted quaver - semiquaver rhythm is played with a triplet feel or in strict time. In the Vivaldi the solo parts could be played on just about any pitch of Trumpet though it would be best if the twosoloists could use the same pitch of Trumpet whatever that may be. Players that own natural Trumpets and never play them might see this as an ideal opportunity to let them off!The Latin section needs to be played with good rhythm and a sense of fun. The shock notes is Trumpets Horn and Trombone bars 73-74 are best omitted unless absolutely tight.

Full Score.This work was composed in 1964 at the request of the well known American tuba player Roger Bobo. It was soon taken into the repertoire of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble who gave the first BBC broadcast. The first recording was on Pye records by the Hallé Brass Ensemble. Since then it has become a regular repertoire piece and recorded as well as broadcast all over the world.The Suite consists of five movements all illustrating aspects of the Burlesque Theatre Music Hall circus and cabaret so popular at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. The titlesof the short movements are: Soubrette Song Trick Cyclists Adagio Team Soft Shoe Shuffle and Les Girls.The five orchestral brass instruments (two trumpets horn trombone and tuba) are exploited in a chamber music manner but the cumulative effect has a theatrical quality in keeping with the title.

Brass quintets are exuberant almost by definition and Davies's certainly does not disappoint. It has though the rarer quality of being a consistent gripping and fully developed work: a piece as substantial as one might expect a string quartet to be. There are three movements of which the first is a romping Allegro with a slow introduction. Then comes a slow movement with vividly alive duetting from the trumpets and the finale is again fast except for a passage of questioning before the end.Set of parts.This is a special item which is made to order. Eileen Clews. Suite of five short pieces providing an interesting challenge for young players of intermediate standard or a lightweight recital filler for more experienced brass quintets. Each instrument is featured in turn contrasting bright rhythmic pieces with more lyrical solos for second trumpet and tuba.

Like many of Davies’s smaller works this is in a relatively lucid modal style midway between the clarity of his carols and the complications of his symphonies: the opening is in a kind of B flat minor and the close is triumphantly in G flat major. What happens in between -- always in 4/4 march time but usually with exuberant syncopations and cross-rhythms - is a sequence of transformations of the theme heard first from the second trumpet on the top line at the start; it will be heard again from the horn and from the first trumpet in upward-moving inversion with brilliant climaxes to punctuate. An ebullient piece in a simplified yet still very distinctive harmonic andrhythmic style and surely destined to make a rousing encore item. Arranged for brass quintet.
