To arrange one of the most beautiful organ fugues by the great classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) for concert band is certainly a demanding task. from Cantata No 208 'The Hunt Cantata'-L?immense production de Jean-Sébastien Bach ne contient qu?une vingtaine de cantates profanes dont la Cantate du café (BWV 211) la Cantate du mariage (BWV 202) Phébus et Pan (BWV 201) et la Cantate de la chasse (BWV 208) dont est extrait l?air Sheep May Safely Graze (Schafe können sicher weiden - Que les brebis paissent en paix). Bach était depuis peu au service du duc de Weimar lorsqu?il accepta en 1713 une invitation à Weißenfels pour l?anniversaire du duc Christian de Saxe-Weißenfels. À cette occasion il composa la Cantate de la chasse une cantate de félicitations à l?adresse du duc passionné de chasse. Par la suite Bachremania cette cantate pour célébrer d?autres fêtes et anniversaires. La Cantate de la chasse est orchestrée pour quatre voix solistes incarnant des figures mythologiques (Diane Pales Endymion et Pan) un ensemble orchestral assez large (incluant des flûtes/flûtes à bec des hautbois et des cors) et un Chœur mixte. Le texte chantant les vertus de la chasse est un panégyrique à peine déguisé du duc régnant. Accompagnée par deux flûtes (flûtes à bec) Palès déesse des troupeaux et des pâtures entonne l?air Sheep May Safely Graze. Bien que de caractère profane le texte utilise l?image du berger comme l?image même de la grâce en référence à une parole fondamentale de Jésus.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) a écrit de nombreux chorals qui sont restés très populaires. La mélodie Ich steh an deiner Krippen her (BWM 469) écrite en 1736 et publiée pour la première fois dans le recueil de cantiques de Schemelli en est un excellent exemple. Avec l'arrangement de ce choral pour ensemble de cuivres Jacob de Haan a écrit une composition qui enrichit merveilleusement chaque programme de concerts de Noel.

Johann Sebastian Bach could not have wished for a better accolade. A Tribute to Bach is a daring arrangement of Bach's Partita no.2 for pianoforte and a homage to the grandmaster of Baroque in a modern orchestration. Arranger Axel Norman has achieved this by adding percussion tastefully to the original. The woodwind section of the band however plays the leading parts.

Jesu bleibet meine Freude from Cantata 147-Bach’s appointment as the Cantor at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche in 1723 required him to produce a new cantata for every Sunday service. Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring is taken from his Cantata No.147 and is unusually elaborate treated more like an aria than a chorale. It is perhaps the best-loved cantata movement from Bach’s entire output and is a certain crowd pleaser for your concert programme.

Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme-This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach’s Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines demonstrating Bach’s counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the trumpets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage.

August lebe lebe König from Cantata 207a-A Festive Tribute (?Hommage festif?) est le titre de cet arrangement du superbe chœur extrait de la cantate profane BWV 207 écrite par Bach en 1726 mais qui connaîtra un franc succès dans sa deuxième mouture intégrée dans la Cantate BWV 207a Auf schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten(?Résonnez éclatantes trompettes !?).Comme à son habitude Bach puise dans des œuvres antérieures. Ainsi à l?exception des récitatifs la Cantate BWV 207a reprend le tissu musical de la Cantate BWV 207 elle-même fortement inspirée des oncertos brandebourgeois La Cantate BWV 207a est une œuvre datée de 1735 et dédiée à Auguste III roi de Pologne et prince électeur de Saxe. Jean-Sébastien Bach a composé plusieurs œuvres pour le nouveau souverain en appui à sa candidature au poste de compositeur de la Cour titre honorifique qu?Auguste III lui accordera finalement en 1736.Si le texte de la cantate est un rien obséquieux la musique est festive et exploite les couleurs luxuriantes de l'orchestration. Bach joue des possibilités du grand orchestre avec trompettes hautbois d?amour et flûtes. Le chœur final August lebe lebe König ! (?Vive Auguste ! Vive le roi !?) nous révèle un Bach hautement cérémoniel.

Et si Jean-Sébastien Bach le célèbre compositeur baroque était né au XXe siècle ou plus tard ? Vous écouteriez probablement sa musique d?une autre façon.
