The second of the Two Pieces for flute and harp or piano accompaniment,'“2. The squirrels” is a lovely short piece composed by Henri Busser. Really different from the “1. The swans,” this piece is much more cheerful and slightly faster. It is perfect to work on the flexibility of the tone and good training to be able execute more challenging pieces. Starting in D major, the piece has a ternary form (ABA), with a beginning in staccato, a slower B part and the repeat of the initial theme for the end. The most difficult part of this piece will be found in the last two measures, with really fast notes to play. It will be necessary to start to play them at a slower tempo to get the perfect technique and then increase the speed. This work is preceded by “The Swans,” with a difficulty rated at 5. Henri Busser (1872-1913) is a French classical composer and organist. He was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and a member of the Académie française. He wrote a ballet, numerous operas and chamber music.

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire, his Two Sketches being noexception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, Gaubert was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time thatGaubert composed, including his Two Sketches for Flute and Piano, which is made up of two movements. The first of these, Night on the Plain, conveys many technical features, including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range,lyricism, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms. Night on the Plain from Two Sketches is a challenging yet exciting piece for aspiring flautists.

Even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), admittedly, was no fan of the flute, he wrote unforgettable music for this instrument 'that I can't stand': two concertos, a double concerto with harp, the original version of the Wind Concertante and the four flute quartets. Commissioned by the Dutch physician and amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean, Mozart wrote his two solo concertos in 1777/78 during a stay in Mannheim. As the middle movement of the Concerto in G major KV 313 supposedly was too difficult for the client -with regard to the playing technique and/or music - the composer wrote an alternative version, 'Andante' KV 315 (285e). This nice individual movement is now presented in a carefully edited new edition, with a cadenza of the editor - a serenade-like setting that offers the soloist many possibilities for cantabile playing.
