Cette sonate pour piano et violon (on notera l'ordre très beethovénien d'énoncé des deux instruments) date de 1921, période extrêmement prolifique pour Lucien Durosoir, récemment revenu de la guerre. Cette oeuvre nous immerge d'emblée dans le style le plus mature du compositeur (dès mes premiers essais, je donnerai des fruits mûrs, écrivait-il à sa mère durant la guerre). Harmonie tourmentée, superposition de rythmes contraires, vertige de la difficulté, thèmes inquiets voire angoissés débouchant sur une séquence d'une allégresse irrépressible : c'est comme si la vie et la mort se livraient, par la voix des instruments, un combat sans merci. Mais toujours l'espoir y resurgit, fût-il fugace et presque insaisissable.

Par DAVIS OLIVER. 'For many years the violinist Kerenza Peacock and I have been discussing the concept of a piece about trees. One day I received in the post from her a book by Annie Davidson entitled, ‘How to be More Tree’. This brilliant book became the inspiration for the Arboretum Suite. The first tree I decided to write about was Aspen. I read that Aspen trees work together sharing water and nutrients through their root system, so only as a community can they grow in strength. Aspen is followed by Açai Palm, a tree which is native to Brazil and Argentina, hence the Latin American feel of this movement. The score is marked pizzicato, the plucked sound further accentuating the South American rhythms. The Vanishing Mahogany of the Amazon naturally has a very sombre feel, although the major key ending of this movement reflects the hope that we may still manage to save the rain forests. The last movement describes my response to the description of the Mountain Hemlock. The borrowing of music from churches outside England is explored and a large section is devoted to the often surprisingly ingenious ways in which secular music has since the beginnings of the English church been appropriated as music for worship - often with controversial results. From madrigal tomusic-hall from plainsong to popular styles: these and many other kinds of music have lent both styles and material to sacred music with English texts. By examining these musical transformations this book demonstrates that English church music is far from being an exclusively insular and retrospective repertory as is often presumed to be the case.
