Edited by Ron Erickson. Sonata No.4 completed in 1948 was entitled 'No. 2' by Antheil. It appears from the list of workds he made in 1944 that of the works from the Paris years he wanted to consolidate the Sonata No. 1 withthe third and ignore the second so that all the violin and piano sonatas before 1940 would be known as one work - called Sonata No. 1. Modern notation conventions have been adapted to Antheil's chromatic-polytonal language inorder to make the text as definite and as readable as possible. In this edition poytonal key signatures sometimes are substituted for masses of accidentals.

The 'Romanian Folk Dances' undoubtedly rank amongst Bartók's most popular compositions. The earliest version is scored for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918. The composer himself orchestrated this version in 1917. Several other chamber music arrangements (for example Zoltán Székely's version for violin and piano) were not by Bartók although he authorised them. The musical material derives from Bartók's collections of folk music which date right back to 1904 when he wrote down a melody sung by a Hungarian peasant girl. In the course of extensive travels throughout Eastern Europe Bartókcompiled an enormous collection of folk tunes (by 1918 his collection comprised no fewer than 2700 Hungarian 3500 Romanian and 3000 Slovak dances and songs) which would in all probability have been lost had Bartók not written them down. As it was some of them found their way into his compositions. In 1908 Bartók jotted down dance tunes in Transsylvania. They are the source of the 'Romanian Folk Dances'.

The first signs of a revival in Italian music at the beginning of the twentieth century are mostly found in the important contributions of a generation of musicians all born in and around the year 1880: Ottorino Respighi Ildebrando Pizzetti Gian Francesco Malipiero and Alfredo Casella.Thanks to them the music scene in Italy began to widen its horizons which basically meant going beyond the 'exclusive cultivation of melodramatic opera and encouraging an awareness of symphonic music in the country.' This anthology provides a meaningful overview of the music for Violin and Piano written by these composers the founders of the movement and also by thosethey inspired. The pieces have been selected for their musical value their didactic usefulness and their ability to represent a particular period in the history of Italian music and culture.

Grieg?s third Violin Sonata is one of his major creations and stands alongside the sonatas of Johannes Brahms and César Franck at the pinnacle of late nineteenth century chamber music. One small measure of the work?srenown is its occurrence in Thomas Mann?s novel 'Doktor Faustus'. The sonata has been growing more popular ever since its first publication and it is now high time for it to appear in an urtext edition from Henle. A preface anddetailed editorial notes provide interesting background material on the work?s source tradition.

This complete edition of the Mozart sonatas for violin and keyboard has been researched and prepared by Cliff Eisen one of the most distinguished Mozart scholars of our time. Professor Eisen recognizes that many of the apparent inconsistencies and idiosynchrasies of Mozart's notation are perfectly deliberate and that the attempts in many other editions to impose uniformity upon similar phrases or musical paragraphs can bemisguided. As he writes in the preface '...the notion that the classical style represents a model of symmetry balance and clarity is for the most part an 19th-century fiction...it has little to do with Mozart's actual practice which is basedprimarily on variety of both content and articulation.' So in this new edition alternative readings found in parallel passages are preserved rather than being sterilized by a spurious quest for conformity. Naturally all such instances are noted within the Critical Commentary. The highly individual beaming within Mozart's autographs is also respected in the new edition as this often contributes to our aural perceptions of phrase structure and accent. Professor Eisenis is conscious that there is no single 'Urtext' for this music. On the contrary he believes that 'there is compelling evidence that Mozart's later performances of his works were characterized by changes--sometimes substantial changes--in the musical text.' While Pachelbel has been most admired as a composer of organ works and Lutheran church music his Canon in D has long been one of his most celebrated compositions. It combines two time-honored compositional devices. The first of these is of course the canon a procedure whereby a melody in one part is strictly imitated by one or more other parts; a round (such as for example Frère Jacques) is a type of canon. The second device involves a short bass line (refeered to as a ground bass) that is repeated constandly over which the composer writes continuous variations. In its original form the work consists of an initial statement of an eight note ground bass followed by27 variations in strict canonic style for three violins above that bass. In addition to these four essential parts an appropriate harmonic background would have been improvised on harpsichord lute or organ. In the present arrangement Pachelbel's note values have been doubled for greater ease of reading and the work's canonic structure has been somewhat modified in order to make it more readily playable by violinists and pianists at an intermediate level. Since dynamics bowing indications articulations and slurs were not customarily provided by composer of the Baroque era the arranger and the editor have added them here as well as a metronome indication and a few cadential trills. Obviously these editorial additions should be regarded only as suggestions.

Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme - the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey and Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available for the first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano
