American Composer's Forum – BandQuest Series – Grade 3Mosaic is an aural representation of the varied qualities each of us possess and contribute to the whole of our American society. Letter from Sado is an exciting new piece for young band based on a Japanese haiku of the same name. Sado refers to Sado Island in Japan in which various artists religious and military leaders were sent in exile many years ago. The island hashistorically had a strong community of taiko drummers and as such the piece incorporates optional homemade taiko drums. Blackshaw writes: ?To capture the idea of interpretation and the concept of reading between the lines the students are invitedto become decision makers about particular sections in the music. For example the opening and closing sections of the piece use the same material which is a selection of repeated melodic figures. The students themselves decide how to play thesefigures as individuals in small teams and then as a whole band. Their decisions include ideas regarding tempo (how fast?) dynamics (how loud?) and articulation (smooth short or hard?). To inspire them we use the haiku poem; i.e. the openingsection invites the students to play the material as if it were a stormy wild sea and the closing section invites the students to play the same melodic figures but this time draw their inspiration from Heavens River or as we know it the MilkyWay. In-between there is an elaborate heavily textured section that becomes increasingly powerful. The music doesnt rest harmonically until the whole band plays in unison. These multiple layers of sound represent the many thoughts and ideas thatwould have surrounded those individuals sent to Sado Island in exile the final unison is representative of their own breakthrough experience sending them on a pathway to inner peace and acceptance.? Suite Pigalle. Erik Satie, born in Honfleur in Normandy (France) in 1866 is undoubtedly one of the most striking personalities in the history of French music. He composed in various, often quite divergent, styles. Besides light-hearted, entertaining works he also wrote several serious compositions, among which the three ballets: Parade, Relâche and Les Aventures de Mercure. However, his piano pieces, such as Trois Gymnopédies or Gnossiennes will remain his most popular compositions. Satie cooperated with almost all the great artists of his time: Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Sergei Diaghilev, Georges Braque and composers Darius Milhaud (Le Groupe des Six) and Claude Debussy. Arr. Wil Van Der Beek. Par FUCIK JULIUS. Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvorák and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster, a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music, songs, choral works, a mass, a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren, Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella, Fucik takes us toan imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella, a girl of the sea, accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard, the murmur of the sea, fragments of a waltz melody from a café and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. Shawn Okpebholo?s Heritage, in the Edition Peters Concert Band Series, evokes moods, events and sounds (including West African drumming and indigenous melodies) from an ethnomusicological research visit the composer undertook to Nigeria. One of the primary musical themes of the work is an adaptation of a song that comes from the Esan people, a small ethnic group in the southern part of Nigeria and the tribe to which the composer has deep historical and family ties. The Esan language is poetic in nature and, at various moments in the work, the musicians chant the text from an Esan song: Ekine leleyea do obhimen la doeki nalo (My investment in you is paid off. Because of your hard work, your future is bright). Heritage is a revised version of a work previously entitled This is Africa, which was commissioned by Professor Marcellus Brown and the Boise State University Symphonic Winds for the 2011 National CBDNA Convention and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Harry Begian. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band

From Coppelia Ballet-French composer Léo Delibes (1836-1891) was primarily known for his operettas and short comic operas. He was also famous for the ballet Coppelia from which arranger Wil van der Beek has transcribed the czardas for concert band. Characteristic of this work and the music of Delibes' in general are rhythmic alternating melodies. Another trademark of Delibes' work is the skilful choice of instrumentation a facet which this transcription honors thoroughly.The piece is a succession of the various themes the composer uses to work towards a brilliant climax.

Par SAUCEDO RICHARD. This powerful work for band is composed in two main sections. The opening slow section features stunning impact points mixed with moments of majestic lyricism and distinctive harmonies. The energetic Presto section in 3/4 is introduced using a percussion ostinato with heroic and fanfare-like figures layered in from various sections of the band. for Symphonic Band-Rio Grande (2015) for symphonic band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daughertys follow-up to his iconic Niagara Falls (1997). The title refers to the legendary 1 250-mile river that flows from the mountains of southern Colorado to the Gulfof Mexico near Brownsville Texas. In Rio Grande the composer has created a powerful musical landscape that is magical and majestic. The percussion section comprised of timpani bongos woodblocks tom toms and bass drums creates a rhythmicundercurrent to an angular motif that is first heard in the woodwinds emerging high above the musical precipice. This jagged motif is passed on to individual instruments such as the tuba and eventually in various colorful guises to the entiresymphonic band. Reminding us of the long cultural history associated with the great river we also hear ghostly Mexican mariachi music echoing faraway through the canyons. In the coda all the musical material is combined to create a grandiose endingto our journey down the timeless Rio Grande. A resounding success at the world premiere given by the North Texas Wind Symphony (Eugene Migliaro Corporon conductor) Rio Grande should prove to be one of Daughertys most popular and performed bandworks for years to come.

This piece was commissioned by the ‘Concert Band Vlamertinge’ and is a plea for peace: the title translates as ‘Peace on Earth’. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize the words ‘Et In Terra Pax’ - an appeal for peace - at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured developing into synchronized massed voices.The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D E G A and C (taken from ‘ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE’ and the name of the conductor NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the firstexplosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured albeit with a differently colored sound: the words ‘Et In Terra Pax’ bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming cho-rale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem ‘Sonnet’ by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro the broad almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more this time broadly while the words ‘Et In Terra... Pax’ are repeated again and again by the rest of the orchestra.The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life too.

Par DOBSON SIMON. Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, 'Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to.” It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland. Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title.The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.
