This is one of three early renaissance Marian motets, along with Mouton's Nesciens Mater and de la Rue's Gaude Virgo, edited by Ross Duffin. It is a classic example of this great composer's balanced unfolding of motifs, with two-part paired imitation followed by four-voice imitative sections and punctuations in homophony. Especially, striking is the personal supplication at the end, in the words O rnater dei, memento mei. Fazer Editions of Early Music is a choral series under the editorial supervision of Paul Hillier, founder and artistic director of the renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Although each title in this series is the result of careful scholarly research and is a reliable source for musicologists, the series' main purpose is to make practical performing editions available to choirs and other vocal ensembles. The original C clefs have been replaced by G and F clefs and the note values adapted to conform to modern practice. All the works in the series are intended for mixed voices. Each title includes a lengthy introduction in English and notes on the editorial principles. Where necessary, an English translation of the text and a guide to pronunciation are provided.

Lofty musical aspirations are met and surpassed in this Psalm setting, which is the next installment in the composer's exploration of the Psalter. Modern melody meets classic text to celebrate the creative power of God in a sacred tone poem filled with fascinating sonic moments. Lush and expressive, the opening is a soundtrack of praise. Later the piece recounts the days of creation and the unfolding of the universe while counterpointing with the Latin phrase, Cantate Dominum. This is a stunning choral moment that builds intensity to a rhapsodic melody soaring to dizzying heights. This significant anthem ends quiescently with a final affirming Amen. Made popular by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Grammy winning performance in 1959, Peter Wilhousky's famous arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic has remained a staple to this day. In this Critical Edition for Band edited by Justin P. Tokke, a new arrangement has been crafted based on Wilhousky's original orchestral scoring. To enhance playability, generous cross-cuing and doubling of the choral parts have been applied in cases where the band version is played without voices. This new arrangement ensures complete compatibility with both the choral and orchestral versions, with matching measure numbers and rehearsal marks, and comes complete with a full score and parts produced with modern engraving standards. This exciting edition is ready to continue Wilhousky's legacy and hopes to inspire future collaboration and new performance opportunities.

When you read the prose of Robert Frost's “Stopping by Woods on Snowy Evening,†you may be struck by the beautiful imagery and quaint mood that the text conjures. Roger Emerson's brilliant choral setting of this classic American poem takes the form and structure of the (mostly) monosyllabic text and weaves a modern, familiar and truly breathtaking musical interpretation akin to a brisk, moonlit gallop of a horse and its rider! Outstanding!

Franz Schreker was an important representative of the Wiener Moderne and one of the most successful opera composers at the beginning of the 20th century. To conclude his studies at the Vienna Conservatory he set Psalm 116 for women's choir and orchestra (1900) and dedicated to his beloved teacher Robert Fuchs, in reverence. Fuchs, the highly respected composition teacher, was a close friend of Johannes Brahms and a champion of Brahms's romantic classicism. Thus, Schreker's psalm setting closely follows the tonal language of Brahms. In 1901 Psalm 116 was first performed in a concert of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and was first published in the same year by the Viennese publisher Adolf Robitschek. The scoring of the psalm is identical with that of Brahms's Deutsches Requiem, which would suggest and facilitate a performance of both these on the same concert program. Score available separately - see item CA.751000.
