Few other works posed Brahms so many artistic and critical challenges as the Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny.) The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound†to create the portmanteau word “sound together†or “harmony.†The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

With the Schicksalslied Brahms created a very personal interpretation on the theme of fate in a timeless piece of music that will not fail to impress in concert hall or church. The new edition is a modern Urtext edition of the score based on current editorial principles. It is based not only on the composer's personal copy of the first edition as the primary source, but also on the engraving manuscript which was long thought to have been lost. Thus the composer's handwritten corrections made in this manuscript could be incorporated in the new edition, as well as a revision in this bilingual edition of the English translation of Friedrich Holderlin's dramatic poem. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1039900.

With his Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), inspired by a text by Friedrich Holderlin, Brahms created a timeless piece of music with his personal interpretation of the idea of destiny. The work is impressive both in the concert hall and in a sacred space. With the publication of this arrangement for chamber orchestra, smaller choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work too. The scoring (for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, timpani, and strings) is identical with the chamber orchestra version of the German Requiem (Carus 27.055/50), so that the two works can easily be combined in a concert program. A trumpet and trombone can be added ad libitum. The choral parts match the original version, so that the vocal score and choral score from that version can be used. Score available separately - see item CA.1039900.

One of the compositional focuses of the German composer and pedagogue Karl Marx is on choral and amateur music. His songs based on the words of Hermann Claudius are among the best known.

In 1724, Bach composed the cantata Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir [Lord, as you will, do unto me] BWV 73 for the third Epiphany Sunday. Like in some other cantatas from the first annual cycle, the opening movement contains a part for corno which would in fact have been unplayable on an instrument of that era - probably also a reason why Bach allocated this part to the organ in a repeat performance (both variants can be performed using the Carus edition). The unusual choral movement, interrupted by recitatives, is based quite substantially on a short four-note motive which is introduced by the horn; at the end of the chorus, the choir sings it to the words Herr, wie du willt [Lord, as you will] - an avowal which also quite substantially characterizes other movements of the cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3107300.
