Full Score-The premiere of La Bohème took place at the Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February 1896. Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica based their libretto for this opera on Scènes de la vie de Bohème by Henry Murger. It took Puccini only a fewmonths to complete a score brimming with wonderful melodic invention and orchestrational genius. The music is a surprisingly supple and sensitive medium for depicting a variety of emotions that animate the young: reckless living full of stop-gapexpedients erratic feelings and sudden explosions of noble sentiment the driving ambitions of one?s art. Puccini's 'La Boheme' is based on Henri Murger's novel 'Scènes de la vie de bohème' which draws it's inspiration from the Bohemian lifestyle which was somewhat in vogue in Paris at the time. This Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa andLuigi Illica runs as follows:Rodolfo?s neighbour in his garret Mimi knocks at the door saying her candle has gone out on the stairs. Rodolfo and Mimi sit in the dark talking and fall for each other. They go to meetRodolfo?s friends. While there Marcello's former lover Musetta arrives with her new husband Alcindoro but distracting him falls into Marcello's arms. Some time later Mimì pours out her distress to Marcello over Rodolfo'sincessant jealousy Rodolfo is actually concerned about Mimi?s poor health and wants to part with her. On realising this the two decide to stay together until spring Marcello and Musetta meanwhile part when she isunfaithful.Some months later Rodolfo Marcello and friends are amusing themselves in the garret when Musetta bursts in saying Mimi is downstairs and has begged to be taken to her lover to die. She dies almost happily recalling their early love.

Based on the heartbreak of Madama Butterfly a 15-year-old Japanese girl who abandons her people and her religion in a marriage to Pinkerton a United States Naval Lieutenant and in a conversion to Christianity the work undoubtedly had greater meaning toits American audiences following the occupation of U.S. troops in Asia during the mid- and late-twentieth century. Testo Cantato In Italiano-Madama Butterfly took wing under turbulent circumstances. The premiere (Milan Teatro alla Scala 17 February 1904) was a disaster; while a second production only months later (Brescia Teatro Grande 28 May 1904) was instead a resounding success. Inthe intervening period the composer had made considerable changes to the score enough that the result qualifies as a ?second version?. Still other changes were to come however as the opera toured in successive productions. The definitive version which is reflected in this edition was produced in 1906 at the Opéra Comique in Paris and published by Ricordi the following year. Puccini thus invested considerable effort into the creation of his favorite opera ? and into shaping the fate of theheroine herself a manifestation of the extremes of patient waiting and steadfast love. The music is a complete and masterful expression of the pity and disillusionment that surround the figure of Cio-Cio-San: her absolute but misguided hope herpathetic pretence in the name of love her miserable demise.
