The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. Score available separately - see item CA.4067800.

Hail Lovely and Pure is a setting for a cappella chorus of a short poem from The Second Shepherds' Play, an English mystery play written in the 15th century by The Wakeï¬eld Master of Northern England. Mystery (or miracle) plays were a form of medieval drama that represented Biblical subjects such as the Creation and the Last Judgment. The text consists of the ï¬rst lines spoken by the shepherds when they entered the stable to celebrate the birth of Jesus. My brother David C. K. McClelland (1947-1976) translated this fragment from the original Middle English and made a small calligraphic version of it which I discovered among his papers. David probably intended to make a larger, more elaborate manuscript of the poem, though if he did so it has not been found.SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2011 Published by: WMC Music (BMI).

Pamela Stewart's text comes alive when paired with Victor Johnson's music. Written in an a cappella Renaissance-style, the 6/8 meter propels the music forward, and optional hand drum and tambourine parts complete the musical package. The lyrics speak from the point of view of the shepherds, as they joyfully tell the world what they have seen and heard: Gloria! Sing gloria! Each heart a bed of hay, every life a Bethlehem, each day a Christmas Day!â€.
