After musical training in Naples Niccolo Jommelli began to make his name as an opera composer from the end of the 1730ies onwards. From 1750 until 1753 he was assistant director of music at St. Peter's, Rome, and responsible for the music at the Cappella Giulia - years which were decisive for Jommelli's sacred music. During those years he also composed the three-movement setting of the Whitsun hymn Veni Creator Spiritus for solo soprano, mixed-voice choir, string orchestra and continuo. It is marked by the maturity of the writing for the solo voice, modelled on the example of composers such as Johann Adolf Hasse, and by stylistic hallmarks of Jommelli's music, such as his relatively simple yet highly effective choral writing. Score available separately - see item CA.4041800.

French composer, Jean Gilles (1668-1705) received his musical training as a choirboy in Aix-en-Provence. His substantial works are entirely religious, Mass for the Dead being no exception. Gilles catalogue comprises a significant amount of choral work. His choral composing style often alternate passages sung by soloists and the chorus, as is the case in Mass for the Dead. His musical style was influenced by Andre Campra, a leading Opera composer of the day who Gilles succeeded as music master at the Cathedral of Saint Etienne in Toulouse. For all choirs seeking alternative repertoire, Mass for the Dead provides a riveting performance..

From the blog of Opera Roanoke: The four spirituals are densely packed portraits resonant with the black church tradition... Weaving together a fabric of history and presence, pain and struggle, exile and homecoming, Goin’ Home is an engaging musical canvas whose complex palette is challenging as it is rewarding.

Written in memory of Erich Fried (1921-1988), a writer who wrote the libretto for Goehr's opera Arden Must Die and whose poems were set in Warngedichte (op. 22), Carol for St Steven is a short and playful carol about St Steven as a servant boy in King Herod's Hall. Seeing the Star and realising that Jesus has been born, the boy tells King Herod whose overreaction results in Steven being stoned to death (explaining why the Vigil of St Stephen takes place on Christmas Night). With a treble soloist singing the lines of Steven and a bass singing the parts of Herod, Goehr's carol for St Steven is an alternative carol in many senses, but one that would be ideal for both amateur and professional choirs looking for new repertoire.

Sacred works occupy a large part of Charles Gounod's oeuvre. It was the Messe solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte Cecile that established his fame as a church composer. Its melodic invention and effective handling of the orchestra reveal a close proximity to opera. This Urtext edition is based not only on the original print of 1856 but also on copyists' manuscripts and autograph sources. Rounding off this well-researched Urtext edition are an informative Introduction and a detailed Critical Commentary. The edition is being published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Gounod's birth.

Jan Dismas Zelenka's Missa Sancti Josephi occupies a key position among his circa twenty large masses. In this mass, probably composed in 1732 for a feast of a Saint (thus, without a Credo), for the first time the composer took up the operatic style of Johann Adolf Hasse - the latter had first performed his opera Cleofide in Dresden in 1731. Zelenka's unmistakable individuality created a completely independent work with great technical demands which in many details presages the important masses among his late works. The sole source for the first edition of this mass, published here for the first time, is a considerably damaged autograph score which. It is preserved in the Sachsische Landes- und Universitatsbibliothek Dresden. For the Carus edition the experienced Zelenka scholar Wolfgang Horn has expertly reconstructed the missing passages. Score available separately - see item CA.2708200.

French composer, Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent in his day, best remembered for his “Ave Maria” and his opera, Faust. 1854 saw the premiere of his Solemn Mass, also known as the St. Cecilia Mass. This work fully established Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today, Gounod was famed in his day, so much so that at his funeral, Camille Saint-Saëns played the organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod's Solemn Mass proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught the attention of much of Paris when it was first performed. Famous recordings include that of the Chorus of Radio France with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. For all aspiring choirs, Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass is an imperative, sublime addition to the repertoire.
