The Out from the Shadows Choral Series brings you “Summer Is Gone,†a new setting of British poet Christina Rosetti's 1862 poem “Bitter for Sweet.†The composer, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, displays superb control of text painting and dynamics, creating vocal lines as natural as speech. In perfect harmony with Rosetti's text, falling chromatic figures tossed back and forth among voice parts create an inescapable sense of decay and sorrow. Taylor's harmonic rhythm conveys the latent impression of time stretching and constricting. A truly masterful work, this piece makes for a great festival or competition performance. A fun challenge for an accomplished chamber or larger choir, and a memorable addition to any concert. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an English-born composer and conductor who hailed from an English and African musical family. After discovering his inherent musical ability, Coleridge-Taylor's family arranged for him to study at the Royal College of Music under composition professor Charles Villiers Stanford. After completing his degree, Coleridge-Taylor was appointed a professor at the Crystal Palace School of Music and became the conductor of the Croydon Conservatoire Orchestra. With his compositions, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor sought to draw from traditional African music and integrate it into the classical tradition, in a similar fashion to Brahms and Dvorak with Hungarian and Bohemian music. He was a prolific composer and a well-respected conductor in England and America, even touring in America and being received at the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt. His most celebrated work was his cantata Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. On his death, close friend and poet Alfred Noyes said, “Too young to die: his great simplicity, his happy courage in an alien world, his gentleness, made all that knew him love him.â€.

Peter Schindler's full-length secular choral work Sonne, Mond und Sterne (Sun, Moon and Stars) narrates a love story based on old texts which are given a new interpretation through these musical settings. Some individual numbers were published in spring, and now more movements with piano accompaniment are available in print and digitally.- choral work of medium difficulty- will appeal to experienced Brahms Requiem singers as well as ambitious chamber or youth choirs with a gospel, pop or jazz background-cross-over between jazz, chanson, and chamber music Peter Schindler about O Ewigkeit:We step on the stage of life, pull the curtains wide open and venture a glance at the eternal course of the stars. A powerful choral tutti sounds, the key note of C held on in the basses emphasizes the steadfastness of eternity, and above this is chromatic movement in the upper voices which produces friction. In the following softer central section, female and male voices sing separately. They sing in characteristic Gregorian style in vivid images of the immeasurable sand in the ocean, of tears and trickles, of the great beginning and the end of the cosmos. The verses from 1625 convey an image of astonishment, of seeking and not least also of comfort. The text functions as a framework, as it is repeated in a shortened form in the last number of Sonne, Mond und Sterne. It encapsulates the many life situations which are sketched and sung about in the staged cantata in metaphysical questions.

He wrote his poem Gedanken uber die Zeit in his early twenties; it was first published in 1634 as an epitaph. All the nuances of the concept of time are artistically contrasted, and the motif Zeit (time) is explored and played with in a dialectical manner. The male voices begin in unison at an andante maestoso tempo, followed by a leisurely progress in homophonic writing in a slightly freer rhythm. A lively middle section follows which leads into the opening motif again in the last section. The third section contains a fugue, and the end is unison once again. And so the words are like a manifesto by the poet.

The choir chants the question about what Welt (the world) actually is. Hectic bustle is expressed through a pulsing basic motif. This is repeated constantly and moves through the parts. A lyrical B flat minor in the central section allows us to float like shadows on the way into a dream. The song text is a collage. The first verse, by the Baroque poet Christian Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau, is concerned with the vanitas motif: the world, and everything which seems beautiful to us, is ephemeral. The second and third verses were written in the 18th century by Johann Gottfried Herder. Here, the poet expounds the view that real life does not take place in the world and that people's mathematical abilities are insufficient to measure space and time.
