Hans Werner Henze, adhering to his intentions as a composer and teacher, had already made provision for participation by a ,banda' of amateur musicians in the original version of his arrangement of Giovanni Paisiello's Don Chisiotte (1769) which was given its first performance in 1976 at the first Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano. The movements contained in the opera were combined in a suite. Norbert Studnitzky has arranged the pieces for wind band in the orchestration which is internationally recognized. It is sonorous, freshly conceived old music for bands at lower advanced level.Picc. * 2 * 1 * Engl. Hr. (ad lib.) * Es-Klar. * 3 * Altklar. (ad lib.) * Bassklar. * 2 Altsax. * Tenorsax. * Baritonsax. Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .

This work was originally written for brass band (see there). At the composer's request, his former pupil Marcel Wengler wrote an arrangement for Symphonie wind band, which is equal to the original in ever-yway. Here Henze and Wengler have given wind players a work which successfully combines a popular style and to some extent extremely witty elements with the resources of new music. It is excellent concert music for advanced and Professional orchestras.Hans Werner Henze belongs to a small circle of internationally known cornposers of serious contemporary music. In his operas, symphonies, and music for ensembles and chamber music groups, as well as in his contributions to music for amateurs, there are works with a distinctive sense of form, delicate tonality and rhythmic variety which nonetheless never lose sight of that dimension of humanity.Marcel Wengler (born 1946) is now a freelance composer. He lives in Luxemburg.Picc. * 1 * 2 (ad lib.) * Engl. Hr. (ad lib.) * Es-Klar. * 3 * Altklar. (ad lib.) * Bassklar. (ad lib.) * 2 Altsax. * 2 Tenorsax. * Baritonsax. The Japanese arranger Yoshihiro Kimura has skilfullyadapted Respighi?s symphonic poem Fontane di Roma for concertbands of an advanced level. Johann Wanhal (Vanhal) was an important classical composer from Bohemian/Czech heritage (1739-1813). His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses. Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello. In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and classical wind ensemble by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University. This work will also be available soon with a piano reduction.

Speakings for large orchestra and electronics is undoubtedly one of Jonathan Harvey's most important and ambitious works. Composed in 2008, it utilizes a unique process of electronic transformation developed at IRCAM to explore the possibility that an orchestra could be made to speak. Typeset, and with input from Gilbert Nouno who collaborated with Harvey on the electronic element, this long-awaited new edition makes this stunning piece even more accessible to conductors and enthusiasts.Winner of the prestigious Monaco Prize, the 25-minute work belongs to a fascinating clutch of works composed around the time of Harvey's final opera, Wagner Dream, which contains musical allusions to Wagner, in this case Parsifal. Unfolding over three continuous movements, the music moves from the babbling of a baby and the frenetic chatter of human life in all its expressions, to music of unity, a hymn that is close to Gregorian chant in which---in Harvey's words---the paradise of the sounding temple is imagined.
