Telemann's cantata Now thank we all our God cannot be assigned to any of the composer's known annual cycles of cantatas. The given designation, Tempore Messis, which appears in the title in the sole surviving source, suggests it was composed on the occasion of a harvest thanksgiving festival, but the general nature of the text means that other occasions for performance such as New Year, Reformation Day, church or organ consecrations and weddings are conceivable. Musically, the work is distinguished by two spirited choral movements reinforced by trumpets which frame a duet for tenor and bass and an aria for alto and transverse flute. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3910900.

The Harmoniemesse is the last of the High Masses which Haydn composed between 1796 and 1802 for the name day of the Princess Esterhazy, and at the same time it was the last composition which Haydn ever completed. It was given its name because of the important role which the wind instruments play in the Mass. In a number of passages the present critical edition differs from previous editions and, consequently, it follows other readings of the sources. Hence it is also to be regarded as a contribution towards a new evaluation of the work. Score available separately - see item CA.4061200.

Bach's cantata BWV 26 belongs to the Leipzig cycle of chorale cantatas, 1724/25, and it was first performed on 19 November 1724. The underlying 13-vers hymn by Michael Franck provided Bach and his unidentified librettist with an abundance of metaphors and comparisons which, from verse to verse and movement to movement, illustrate the fleeting and transitory nature of earthly life: an impressive musical-poetic exposition of potent baroque pictures of vanity.. Among the vocal compositions incorrectly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, the cantata has a place of its own, because its tonal language approaches the unmistakable style of the Thomaskantor. This applies especially to its choral movements and recitatives. In the surviving sources, only one of which dates back to the 18th century, there are certain compositonal errors which cannot possibly be reconciled to Bach's mature style. The implication is that this is not a genuine cantata by the Leipzig Thomaskantor, but an ambitious piece by one of his pupils. Score available separately - see item CA.3500500.

The Missa in tempore belli by Joseph Haydn is an interesting work in several respecst. Firstly this setting of the Mass provides pointers to the situation of Austrian church music as it had been affected by imperial decrees. Secondly the political situation, with the imminent invasion of Austria by Napoleon's troops, had reached a crisis point which is reflected in the description of this composition as a Mass in time of war. Last but not least, this work is the first of the group of six settings of the Latin Mass which, together with the oratorios The Creation and The Seasons, form the body of Haydn's last period vocal works, and which unquestionably belong among his supreme creative achievements. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4060700.

The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. It is evident from the sources that the cantata was written for the 3rd Sunday after Easter. The text, the identity of whose author is unknown, is based on the comparison between sadness and joy prescribed in the Gospel for that Sunday. This cantata has survived only in copies made after 1750, but undoubtedly the cantata dates from Bachs's years in Leipzig. Score available separately - see item CA.3114600.
